View Full Version : [Dixonary] List of Players

Dodi Schultz
December 29th, 2006, 11:22 AM
Those 15 players who had previously received the roster of Dixonary players
with their e-mail addresses have been sent an updated listing.

If you're not among them and you'd like to have the list, ask and it shall
be e-mailed.

The updated list of players, giving both e-mail address(es) and phone
number for each, has been distributed by private e-mail.

If you find an error--an outdated or incorrect e-mail address, or an
erroneous phone number--please e-mail the correction to me privately (NOT
by reply to THIS message).

Thanks.

Being a bit of a nerd, I've looked up everyone's area code to see
where they are located and produced a modified copy of the Dodi's list
showing that information. If anyone would like a copy by email just
let me know. It's in PDF format, but please specify if you'd prefer
it as text, which is just a bit more difficult to read.

The area code method is a bit imprecise, but at least it gives you a
clue as to the part of the world everyone is in.

That would be neat -- .pdf is fine.

I'd like a copy of the list as well.

TL> everyone's area code ... a bit imprecise

You could get more accurate by reading their email headers and doing a
geographic correlation of their IP address, which should in most cases
pinpoint the nearest big city.

Nonetheless, I'm interested in your list.

Sounds like good nerdish fun. A copy please.

Tim - I'd also like a copy of that modified list which
also shows area codes. That should be of some help.
Somebody mentioned that domain names also provide a
clue, but I don't see that--where is somebody (AT) gmail (DOT) com
located?

SC> where is somebody (AT) gmail (DOT) com located?

You can't tell based just on the email address unless it's a small, local
ISP. And it doesn't work for web-based email, or if you do your email from
a server somewhere rather than your personal computer... presuming you're
mailing from your .edu server, it probably is tied through a different
network than most people who connect directly from home.

But, for example, I can look at the message headers of your message, and
find the very bottom "Received:" entry which shows your computer (or at
least your home's router) IP address. Yours (I've edited the last two
digits for some semblance of privacy)

> Received: from [68.185.1.1] by aarprv04.charter.net ...

Then you go to any of several sites you can find by googling "IP Geolocate"
and enter the address. I went to http://www.geody.com/geoip.php and entered
your IP and got:

IP: 68.185.1.1 Location:
St. Louis, MISSOURI, United States US (Charter Communications)

So this tells me that the ISP you (or your university) are connecting
through is based in St. Louis, Missouri, even if your area code tells me
otherwise.

Scott, the list I sent you has everyone's phone number as well as e-mail
address; the phones of course include area codes. (Tim just made a
geographical list.)

What we really care about is not so much the location as the time zone.
So that if we call, we do so at a reasonable hour, however that might be
defined.

The PDF list I received from Tim seems rather incomplete. For example,
neither Dodi nor I are listed.

Did you print out both pages, Dick? The first page ends with Toni Savage;
you and I, along with Wayne, Mike, Nancy, Guerri, and Dan, are on the
second page.

I'd like a copy. And, yes, the area code gets more imprecise by the day... my sister now lives with me in Brooklyn, but they kept all their Atlanta area codes, both home number and two cell phones. They still get calls from Atlanta businesses...

Toni

A copy of the list will arrive shortly by email.

More than one person has commented that - with the advent of VOIP -
area codes are no longer a totally reliable way of finding out where
people live. Dodi passed me some actual locations that she knew, and
I've added them to the latest edition of my list. However, I think
for our purposes the area code is sufficient. If you want to visit
another player you can always ring them up using the numbers from
Dodi's new list!

Absolutely! And if you are visiting a place, you can always ask in the group if anyone is there (I didn't ask about Fargo, ND, where I just was, but I woulda asked about other places).

Ten days ago, you all should have received a revised, updated list of
Dixonary players with e-mail addresses as well as phones for emergency
use. Now, it needs updating again: there are at least two new e-mail
addresses, as well as a changed phone number.

I'll get a new, corrected version out shortly. If you have different
or additional e-mail addresses that should be added to the list, or a
phone number change--please let me know now (by e-mail), so I can
include it in the revision.

Thanks.
