(Bad?) guesses, as usual:

<< 9. A Russian two-horse sleigh

<< 10. Puppets caused to perform evolutions or dramatic scenes by means of
<< machinery; also, the representations in which they are used.

Wow, this is a tough one! I read all the way through, and found only one
that I knew it WASN'T (my own), and none that I thought it WAS. So my
guesses are even more random than usual today: the puppet show, because it
is one of the strangest defs I've seen, and the hardwood, because it is so
unlike the others.

That's 10 and 14, please.

Obviously a misprint, but should it have been futile,
furtive or fertile??

Best wishes,

Though doubtless wrong, I find the monitor and the hardwood the most compelling: 1 and 14, please.

I think I've left the vote a bit late. 3 & 10.
