From CNN Online today:
Military newspapers say it's time for Rumsfeld to go
An editorial to be published in independent publications that serve the U.S. military will call for President Bush to replace Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. "It's clear now ... that he's lost the support and respect of the military leadership," said Robert Hodierne of the publications' parent company Army Times Publications. "Our aim is simply to say, for the good of the service, for the good of the country, it's time for this guy to go."

Judy,
The various military websites and blogs have been saying this for quite some time, only not on the editorial page with publisher backing.

I was raised in a military family, where the Air Force Times was regularly available. When we heard about this event this morning, I just lost it.

Mike,
I ran a small community newspaper for Bayonne (a military town if ever there was one) and wrote about the folly of this war in 2003. Now, the veterans I know have come around to my point of view. (They gave me a hard time at the local VFW post back then.)

It occurs to me that for military personnel deployed overseas, it's too late for that editorial to have any effect for most of them -- they've likely already sent in their absentee ballot.
Of course, those of them who are deployed in Iraq should already know that Rumsfeld has completely botched his handling of the Iraq war. Of course, he's not alone in that -- the entire Bush administration has botched the handling of the Iraq war. It's not just Rumsfeld who should go.

Lindsey,
There's talk that oveseas mlitary ballots have been manipulated. Can't recall the source, nor the veracity of the allegations.

With people threatening (or even suggesting the possibility for) courts martial for retired military folks who dare to speak critically of the President, only this sort of comment in this sort of newspaper gives real voice to the concerns.

And that those dissenting votes are not lost because of voting machine malfunctions, impossibly long lines at the polls, registration mishaps, or deliberate intimidation.
More and more, vote suppression seems to have become part of the GOP election "toolkit."

Last night made up for the miserable Novembers of 2000, 2002, and 2004!! I was sorry I hadn't arranged to take today off, because I would have loved to stay up all night just to savor the sweet taste of victory. It was especially delicious to hear Chris Matthews's shocked exclamations every time another Republican went down, "Oh, I can't believe it, that guy was a friend of mine!" and to see the deer-in-the-headlights look on Tucker Carlson's face.
Now, the morning after the night before, we have the hard work of cleanup ahead of us...

The part I liked best was Bush's press conference and the way he didn't even try to answer the "if you didn't expect this, doesn't it mean you're out of touch with the country?" question...

Or how he was for Rumsfeld before he was against him . . .
