View Full Version : W2000 didn't work: am back to W98se

Just a couple of observations about my recent experience with W2000. After much effort, no no avail, I ended up fdisk/format and back to W98se. The last few straws were the AM, no PM thing, the printer suddenly vanishing along with the CD player. Finally when the NT Kernel came up as corrupted (out of the blue), I said enough and started over.

I now have my AM/PM back once again and all my periphs working too. A guy from 5Star was helping me with all this and his opinion, even though we could not detect it with any of the various pieces of software utils, was that I had a rootkit/Trojan, (who knows???).

Not a pleasant experience and not one I'll repeat any time soon.

Nick, I wonder whether you were able to get all the Win 98 and IE critical updates from 98 thru 7/11/06 ? As I understand it, they are not available thru windowsupdate anymore.

David,

I'm not sure. I do have:

http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

And when I went to do windows update, something was updated. Can't say for sure if I have it all or not.

"It [exuberant] contains only operating system updates. It does NOT contain Internet Explorer 6, DirectX 9, Media Player 9 and their updates."

FYI IE 6 SP1 is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/default.mspx

I only mention that because for some reason or other MS IE 6 now just opened that page when I just started it up. (My regular home page is BLANK.) Maybe it knows to go there somehow because I am running Win 98 after the July 06 cutoff, who knows?

With Windows, it's hard to tell when a MS IE DLL is running or not since those DLL's are essentially part of the OS. Therefore since I am no longer protected by windowsupdate critical updates, I have my security set to HIGH in the MS IE "Internet Zone". (My Foxmail and Paltalk use MS IE DLL's to do Internet stuff.)

I don't know if this is of any use or not. It's obviously missing a lot of detail (e.g. the "Read more..." 's). I guess that most, if not all, of these updates are still available as non-automated individual downloads somewhere on microsoft.com.

Did you install W2K from an install CD?
I wonder if you were missing some OEM (motherboard) drivers.

My principal Windows system is W2K.
I just finished reloading from scratch a W2K home video recorder/editor/player (AMD2400, 1.5GB RAM, 1x300GB, 4x250GB, ATi X1300).
My install media was a Win2K CD with SP4 "slip-streamed".

Could be hardware. NT-anything stresses memory, busses, etc. much harder. I've had it reveal that the basically satisfactory 98 machine I'd been running for years was trash, when you swapped to certain pages that 98 had never touched.

And all this is PRESUMING the mfr. offers a COMPLETE set of 2000 drivers for the machine and any slushware that comes with the computer (that you want to keep or that can't be cleanly uninstalled).

And all this goes double for laptops.

David,

I have IE6, MP9 and a whole list of updates. Somehow I managed to get a lot of updates from MS when I used IE. The only critical security problem I know for which there is no fix is Windows Explorer and I try not to use that, preferring to use Total Commander. Don't like the open source replacements I've seen for it, in its role as a shell, but that aside, don't know what I can do about it except to make sure Kerio 2.1.5 and AVG 7.5 (free) and AdAware are current. As for IE, I only use it for windows update and minimize it by running IE-OFF.

Frank,

I don't know. Don't think so, as I've run a variety of tests on my firmware and have had no problems before this. As for the Compaq Armada M300. it was designed and built for W2000. Bought it minus OS; got W98se and W2000 retail. Have a CD full of all available drivers, etc., direct from Compaq (or rather HP/Compaq) and check regularly for updates, which have slowed down to a trickle at best, as this is a 2001 machine.

I think something snuck through my firewall, anti-virus, malware protection, probably something I LET in and it did a job on my computer. I'll never know though and so far, my new/old OS (W98se) is running perfectly well. I have a backup HD to replace this one when it goes and a new backup on an external hard drive, so I have hope. <sigh>

Gary,

I installed W2000 from a commercial version of W2000, followed up by installing all drivers required from a CD I had burned, using a Compaq Armada M300 manual which seemed pretty complete in its instructions.

In any event, the laptop is working well once again and although this laptop was designed for W2000, it seems I was not. I know W98se and will stick with it on this older laptop. Next time out, who knows?
