Below are 19 defs for EOZOON, 18 of which are from the rare minds of our players, and one of which is from the medium rare mind of some dictionary editor. Vote, by reply to this post, for any two, in the hope you have thereby chosen the correct definition. The deadline for voting is 2 P.M. (Pacific time) tomorrow, Thursday. Then, you may look up the word, but not until after you vote. That means you, with the Oxford English Dictionary in your lap! How can you stand the weight?

1. A rose-red dye similar in colour to eosin but chemically quite different, derived from fossilized sea snails of the extinct genus metamurex (Tyrian purple is made from members of the modern day genus murex)

2. Any of several Pre-Cambrian stromatolitic cyanobacteria (Gk. "Dawn life").

3. A jellyfish belonging to the class Aeozoa; of or pertaining to an animal of this kind.

4. An eozooic organism.

5. Any of several prehistoric fossilized animalcules.

6. A Greek dish containing orzo, raisins, feta cheese, dried tomatoes, grated lemon, and spices.

7. A primitive organism found in plankton.

8. A fossilized egg or a fossil imprint of an egg.

9. A fertility goddess of the Australian aboriginals.

10. A space between corbels in a parapet.

11. Any of several tropical plant species whose petals open at the sun's first
rays. [from Gk. Eos, goddess of dawn]

12. A very early one-celled animal (fr. Gr. _eos_, dawn and _zoion_, animal)

13. A rarely used double-reed orchestral instrument midway in range between a bassoon and an oboe.

14. An extinct protozoan of the Paleozoic era.

15. A place of bestial debauchery

16. A tribe in the mountains of New Guinea, discovered in the 1930's.

17.A small boat used for fishing, sailing, or coasting and having two or three masts, each with a lugsail, and two or three jibs set on the
bowsprit.

18. A peculiar structure found in the Archaean limestones of Canada and other regions. By some geologists it is believed to be a species of gigantic Foraminifera, but others consider it a concretion, without organic structure.

19. Of, pertaining to, or occurring in the latter portion of the tertiary period.

Bob -

Quite a diverse collection. I'll try a pair:

2. Any of several Pre-Cambrian stromatolitic cyanobacteria (Gk. "Dawn life").

12. A very early one-celled animal (fr. Gr. _eos_, dawn and _zoion_, animal)

Thanks,

Chuck

Odds are it's one of those prehistoric defs, but may be not. I'll pick 1 and 11 at random.

Bob

Well its too obvious to be directly dawn life (isn't it ?) so I'll not go for those.. How about dawn not-life (#18) and dawn
flowers (#11)

So #11 and #18 for me please

12 and 18 -- did you consider merging ten of the defs? <g>

Hmmm... number 8, because it seems to make sense. And number 1,
because the idea of a dye made from fossilized snails is just too
darned inventive not to reward with a vote.

Hi Bob,

I'll try my luck with one of the many biological defs, and one of the rest:

> 7. A primitive organism found in plankton.

and

> 13. A rarely used double-reed orchestral instrument midway in range
> between a bassoon and an oboe.

Best, Hugo

Since I'm up so early, I'll go for the dawns: 2 and 12.
