Yikes! Sorry for the delay... just woke up!
OK! 18 lovely definitions for your perusal (nice to be able to use a word like that and know everyone will know it!).
Please vote for TWO by 9pm ET Monday, Oct. 16. That's 6pm Pacific, and the wee smalls of Tuesday on the Other Side.

1. a genus of Psocidae

2. An artificial gemstone of various colours, having exceptional hardness and durability, often used in high-end
costume jewelry.

3. the average (mean) fee commanded for a particular legal service.

4. a hidden room in a sepulchre for the storage of reliquaries.

5. A vault with niches for urns containing ashes of the dead. One of the niches in such a vault.

6. atomic [arch., obs.]

7. a sacrifice where images of gods were placed on couches and offered food.

8. a feeling of well-being, a habitual happy mood.

9. A coarse (1-2 cm) aggregate used in Roman concrete.

10. _rare_ a model, especially of a molecule

11. the cutting edge of a bird's bill

12. A small opening in an interior wall of a church, enabling those in the transept to view the main altar.

13. in ancient Egypt, the inner sanctum of a temple or shrine.

14. A large awning.

15. (Chiefly 19c. Brit.) A derogatory, character-assassinating speech directed against a political opponent.

16. [1811] A proposed name for the new metallic element eventually named aluminum (aluminium).

17. an as yet undiscovered element whose existence is predicted by string theory [ L. tomix 'string']

18. a plump, naked, winged boy in artwork

I vote for one of the crypts and the cutting-edge bill. I really like that
one. I envision a really modern, perhaps partly cybernetic beak.

5 and 11, please.

The divine couch potato, 7, made me laugh out loud. And 18 because I got to
the end without finding another compelling def.

I liked number 1 since I once had a pet Psocidae named Parphelium. Then we moved to a place that wouldn't allow Psocidae, even though I offered to put up a sign that said, "Beware of the Psocidae." They said, "No, you can't have an animal on the property whose name we can't spell." But I'm not voting for that one. I'm just eliminating all the niches, vaults, rooms, and parts of churches, and pyramids and anything Roman, and voting for:

#3, the legal fee, and
#8, the happy mood

I know . . . I'm wrong.

Hi Toni,

I'll vote for one definition that might even be da real def, and one that
I'd love to have thought up myself:

> 2. An artificial gemstone of various colours, having exceptional
> hardness and durability, often used in high-end
> costume jewelry.

and

> 17. an as yet undiscovered element whose existence is predicted by
> string theory [ L. tomix 'string']

Best, Hugo

3 and 14 this time out ... though I really would like to see how 12 could be accomplished ...

They all seem equally likely. I'll try 4 and 5.

Toni -

I'll try:

16. [1811] A proposed name for the new metallic element eventually named aluminum (aluminium).

and

18. a plump, naked, winged boy in artwork

for various reasons.

Thanks,

Chuck
