In keeping with the 'put a round number on it' convention and still somewhat in test mode here is notification of the words files
posted for your delectation - WORDSABC.DIX and WORDS123.DIX

There are at least three tests involved here (I am pretty sure I have got the files correct<grin>) but I am not sure how easy it is
for you to get them from different places... I'd like reports on what happens and what you want (and maybe to reduce traffic here
you could send back-channel (direct to me and not via group) if you wish)

1) I have posted them on the file section of Coryphaeus on the Yahoo games group -- I think you have to log in to get them but you
can try

2) I believe that this email will be reflected to TAPCIS and that the links to the files will therefore be there


3) To avoid anyone having to log-in to either of those sites I have dumped them on a single page website of my own... There you can
definitely just click on the links below and get the files - my 'homepages' will not require a login and there are no links to or
from the page...For me, my browser casually opens the files on hitting the links so I have provided 3 links

use the link with the file in it to see the data as a webpage which you could then save or the link with the htm page to download
the files yourself - leastways, that is how it works for me

John, thanks for posting these files.

In preparation for the closure at CIS, I was keeping up to date a searchable version in a Yahoo Groups database, but if we are going to post the files there, then we need an automated way to keep the two in sync. Someone pointed out (I think it was Marijke) that doing double maintenance on the used word list is silly.

I've done some work on constructing a program to do the matching, and I've hit some mismatches that need to be manually resolved, otherwise the program will keep on trying to do fixes.

Round 1595: Wayne Habberstad's name is misspelt.

Round 1581: I believe that Tim Bourne proposed HAVERSINE before dealing on STRIGOSE. I no longer have a reference for this, maybe someone has Tapcis files going back to 9 February and can confirm it?

Also, does anybody object wildly if we rename these files to have a .txt extension (wordsabc.dix.txt)? The reason I suggest this is that browsers don't know what to do with the .dix extension, which means you have to download the files before looking at them. I realize that Dixomatic is going to need to know about the change.

Yes it was me (and no doubt others). As i'm not currently a maintainer i
have no opinion who should do what, but i'm sure you and John as two
database wizards among you will figure something out.

On that score i have a nano-nitpick too. Round 1540: my name is spelled
"marijke, van Gans" whereas in all the previous rounds i dealt it is
"Marijke, van Gans". As this isn't a new error Johnny is not to blame.
Best to spell it the same in all cases (and the M version would be my
preference for the list, keeping in line with everybody else).

Yes i would object, and for precisely that reason <g>. Those lists are
*intended* for downloading. If people want to read a used-words list
online, there are much better versions, such as your own estimable table
(which is searchable, isn't it)?

So people wanting the WORDS*.DIX most likely *want* to download them.

Now since i use Win9x i found subterfuges to subvert a browser's
inclination to display a file, to coax it into letting you download it
after all, e.g. rightclicking a link and using the context menu. But
(a) this doesn't seem to work on the Yahoo! group's website (!)
(b) in Win3.1x the right click route isn't even available.
Generally the simplest way to download a file is
1) do an ordinary click
2) keep fingers crossed that it isn't one of those pesky file types
the browser tries to display in real time, but one it will just
ask you where to save, first time round.
If you can only get it to display online you then need to choose between
* saving it via the menu (in Firefox, i've had this alter a file behind
my back, editing everything that looks like a relative URL to an
absolute one) or
* select all text, copy it to the clipboard, paste into a text editor
(if that is a DOS one, Windows will do an imperfect code page
translation; if it is Notepad then WORDS???.DIX won't fit in).

All in all, downloading can be fraught with annoyances if the browser's
heart is not in it. Much better to let it think it can't read it, by
giving it a suitable extension, so it lets you save it straightaway as
soon as you click it.

That's a five second change, no prob. Worse is that it would force every
user to upgrade, even if Dix works fine with the way they currently save
messages.

BTW, if we do the name change, against my advice, could we do something
better than thingy.dix.txt ? Double extensions have a bad press because
viral programs use them to confuse the unwary, and ISTR at least one
malware hunting util will offer to delete them on sight <g>.
