View Full Version : [Dixonary] (Dixonary) Rnd 1616: GNIST - The Defs

Phase One of the deal has concluded with only a couple of missteps (sorry again, Frances) and we'll now proceed to phase 2. I am going to use the email to the listserve method for posting since it seems to work well and I don't have to deal with the editor idiosyncracies that gave me trouble on the word post. Obviously, I have some tweaking of defaults to do in tapcis.com

Thanks to the long deadline, we have a very nice crop of 23 definitions for GNIDE, one of which actually came from a dictionary. Please vote for two, by public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 6:00 PM EDT on Friday, June 10, 2005, or 5:00 PM PDT . You will note that I'm stretching the voting deadline as well and will be allowing a 'cushion' for voting in case of slow mail transfers.

As always, newbies are welcome and you do not have to have submitted a def to vote. However, please read the rules before you post.

1. Sand pit.

2. To engage; grapple.

3. The greater goshawk.

4. A headband or fillet.

5. A water gourd (E. Afr.).

6. A crumbly type of schist.

7. To rub with or between the hands.

8. n. [Informal] A large quantity or group.

9. [Pol.] Health; well-being _(used as a toast)_

10. A sort of fish mentioned in the Nibelungenlied.

11. A volcanic rock which is extremely hard but brittle.

12. A high pitched transverse flute used in military bands.

13. A pulmonary infection in parrots, leading to rapid death.

14. 1. Any collection of worthless items; 2. The act of collecting
worthless items.

15. An infection in the tissue surrounding a stone embedded in the frog
of a horse's hoof.

16. Common name for large marsupial from the Paleocene epoch that has
no living descendents.

17. A fire-dog or fire iron used for breaking up burning wood or
charcoal (oe 'gneid' - heat).

18. A multiveined lode containing economically extractable quantities
of two or more distinct metallic ores.

19. Any of various corals of the order Gnidacea, having a flexible,
often branching skeleton of horny material.

20. Merry, jolly. "And certeinly he hadde a gnide note; Well coude he

Tales_

21. [Gk.] The sudden realization that you are naked in a group of
strangers, then remembering that it's OK because you are attending
a Bacchanal.

22. A creature much fiercer than a grue but not as fierce as the
ravenous bugblatter beast of traal; it lives in many gamer's
dungeons, eager to eat any adventurer whose torch has gone out.

23. A woven circular mat packed with grease and surrounding the axle of
the fifth wheel used to support the front of a carriage or wagon,
allowing the front wheels to turn from side to side.

And of course, I didn't really mean 5:00 PM PDT, it should be 3:00PM PDT.
That's what I get for changing one time and not the other.

Are we voting for GNIDE or GNIST?

#6 amuses me for what it sounds like, and the "sort of" def in #10 gets
my second vote, without reading any further...

It's OK, Chris. You can take off the hair shirt now. All is forgiven.

And count my votes for #13 and #17, please.

What would the voting phase be without a couple of missteps of its own. I
have no idea where I got gnist. The word is, of course, GNIDE which I got
correct in the body of the message at least. So far I've logged votes from
Barrs, Gans, Scott, Emery, Hirst, Stevens, Kryvko, Savage, Schultz,
Wetzstein, and Widdis.

I'll have 17 and 18, please -- although I admire the writer of the last one -- bugblatter, indeed.

I'll vote for 7 and 23 because I admire their cleverness, though the
Greek Bacchanal was very tempting.

Hi Chris,

They are wrong, of course, but I couldn't resist the temptation to give
points to the creative authors of #21 and #22.

Best, Hugo
