Our Ford Escort tires owe us nothing and it's time to buy it 4 new ones. We like to use Costco because of their prices but don't know much about tires--any one got any recommendations at which to buy? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Len

L, I can think of NO good reason to scrimp on tires. I would buy the best Michelin tires.

Like shoes, quality counts big time!

>I would buy the best Michelin tires<

Pete, thanks, if I get those at least there's the $60 rebate which should help on the cost. It's a 1999 Ford Escort and we don't know how much longer it will last. Regards, Len

How long are you planning on keeping the car?

don't know much about tires
Tirerack.com (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/SearchTires.jsp) provides a choice matrix in which you can see how different brands and models within a brand compare in the areas of tread life, wet traction, dry traction, noise, comfort, etc etc etc.

>How long are you planning on keeping the car?<

Judy, we keep a car until it gives us trouble running it into the ground--we don't know how much longer the 1999 Escort will last but so far it's been pretty trouble free--has about 125, 000 miles on it. Regards, Len

With only 125,000 miles, you should look at a tire with a 50,000 mile "life" --- in other words, don't go cheap. Tirerack will give you the info you want, but think tire tread life on the high side.

any one got any recommendations at which to buy? Any help would be appreciated.I am not up on brands, but do know that tires contribute enormously to handling and safely. So do get good ones — regardless of how long you think you will need them.

And better to have two sets, summer and winter, if you live anywhere north of Washington, D.C.

Ktinkel, thanks, we live in NJ--we won't be getting two sets of tires but have decided on the more expensive Michelins. Regards, Len

>how much winter driving do you do?<

Ktinkel, we are out and about alot in the winter--we go into NYC for a lot of opera and classical music but wait for them to clear the snow--we don't drive in snow.

Right now I'm deciding between

Sam's Michelin® Symmetry® - P185/65R14 85S
and Costco's Michelin® X-Radial DT P185/65R14

The bottom line is Costco is $20 more expensive for a set of 4 and the Sams is also 10 minutes closer to my house. OTOH I don't know the difference between the 2 tires--it's hard to make a choice. Regards, Len

Buyers were not that happy (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Symmetry) with the Symmetry. Most would not buy it again, and it ranked only 14th out of 26 tires in that category.

The X-Radial DT is a house brand available at BJ's®, Costco®, and Sam's Club®, and I could find no comparitive test data.

I've never been impressed with any Michelin tires except for the top 10%, enthusiast-oriented lines. If this was for my car, I'd have a hard look at this chart (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=AS).
