I finally got round to reading some of the old messages today, and
found the one about the way Tapcis.com and the Coryphaeus Group
interact. I then changed the address with which I subscribe to this
group to the same one I use in Tapcis.com. However, on a message
which was automatically cross posted from Tapcis.com to this group as
message 937, I see my full email address - one which is currently
spam-free. I've therefore switched back to my original
sneakemail.com) address.

Could one of the moderators please confirm that it is only me who
sees the full email address in messages, and that it appears
truncated to everyone else?

Regards

Tim L

The short answer: yes and no.

The complete answer: as far as I can tell, both tapcis.com and the Cory
(Yahoo) group store the full address internally, but use different
mechanisms to prevent you from spam harvesters.

At tapcis.com (which can be read by anyone):
- for messages posted there, the e-mail of the sender is hidden; you can
click his/her name and select send mail to send mail from the web interface,
but without seeing the sender's mail address;
- for messages arriving there from the Cory group, the e-mail of the sender
is hidden and can't be found;
- any e-mail addresses embedded in the body of a message are included, but
protected from automated spam harvesters by replacing the @ symbol with "
(AT) " the . symbol with " (DOT) ".

At the Yahoo Groups site for the Coryphaeus group (which can be read by
anyone):
- for messages posted there (either online at the site or through e-mail),
the Yahoo member name is displayed in the message overview listing and the
e-mail address is displayed in the from line when reading an individual
message - but see below;
- for messages arriving there from the tapcis.com site, the e-mail address
is displayed both in the message overview listing and in the from line when
reading an individual message - but see below;
- all e-mail addresses (in the body of the message, in the from line of
individual messages and in the message overview listing) are truncated,
UNLESS it is your own e-mail address, or UNLESS the user is logged in as a
moderator. This means that only moderators get to see all e-mail addresses.
- all truncated e-mail addresses show as first name, at symbol, ellipsis. If
the e-mail address is used in the body oof the message, it is changed into a
link that can be used to send e-mail without seeing the e-mail address
(similar to how tapcis.com handles the e-mail to member option). The user
will have to be logged in as a Yahoo groups user in order for this link to
work, but he doesn't have to be member of the Cory group

In e-mails sent out by the Coryphaeus group:
- the from line shows the complete e-mail address of the message's sender
(this is visible in all clients except programs that rely on CompuServe's
HMI protocol - apparently, CompuServe substitutes the reply-to address as
the from address);
- all e-mail addresses (both in the from line and in the message body) are
completely visible to everyone. But this can't be abused by spam harvesters,
since only members of the Coryphaeus group can request delivery by e-mail -
and each request for group membership has to be approved by one of the
moderators.

I hope that this clarifies the process and removes your worries.

Best, Hugo

I've now changed my email address in tapcis.com so that it is the same sneakemail.com address as I'm using in the Cory/Yahoo group. I hope that means that this message will appear in the Yahoo group without you having to moderate it.
