How strange! How can one initial message be the root of five different
threads?

I'm really glad I'm playing by e-mail list. No "thread" worries. ;-)

I don't think she meant one message. What she means is that every time
you reply to a message on the list, it starts a new thread on the web
forum, since TAPCIS doesn't track the "Message ID" and "References"
internet headers which are necessary for the threading function to
work. So there are five threads with the same subject line, but only
one is the real "initial" message.

There is a setting to have a "backup" threading check based on the
subject line (starting with "Re:" and matching the rest) which I've
asked Judy to turn on. This should (I hope) attach your replies to at
least the parent message of a thread, and cut down on most of the new
threads we're seeing from TAPCIS users.

Actually, this may not work because unlike most other email clients, TAPCIS does not prepend a "Re:" to email replies.

Is that an option that can be turned on in TAPCIS? Can the subject be manually edited (or done via macro) to add the "Re:"?

One message isn't the root of 5 different threads. Each thread root is
an entirely different message, but the thread titles are the same. Every
time you write a message from your CompuServe account using TAPCIS that
message becomes the start of a new thread in the tapcis.com forum. The
fact that you are *replying* makes no difference. The fact that your
message title is the same makes no difference.

The reason this happens is that your outgoing messages don't contain
some internal information that is needed to match them up with the
original thread. This is not your fault, but is the fault of
CompuServe's HMI interface and/or TAPCIS. I suspect the former.

If you have time and want to experiment, go online and use mail2web to
get your CompuServe mail. Pick one of the Dixonary messages to reply to,
and reply to it, putting in a line that says "from mail2web" or
something that can identify it. Of course, I don't know whether mail2web
will break threads too, but I assume for the moment that it won't.

Leave the messages there - don't delete them. Then read them all with
TAPCIS, and reply to that same message with a note that says "via
TAPCIS" or something. Then let me know what message you chose for your
experiment and I will go into tapcis.com and check on it. Better yet, go
there yourself and check on it.

Assuming mail2web does preserve the threading information, what you'll
see in tapcis.com is this:

Test Thread
Original message
Dodi's reply via mail2web
Test Thread
Dodi's reply via CompuServe/TAPCIS

You could use some other Email client for the experiment, but I suggesed
mail2web because I know that it will allow you to leave messages on the
server for you to pick up later with TAPCIS. And other Email clients may
not, or may have to be set up differently in order to leave the messages
in place.

There is no option in TAPCIS to put "Re:" in front of the subject of a
reply, but it could be put there manually.

I suggest turning on the option in tapcis.com and seeing what happens.
If it doesn't work, Dodi can experiment with putting in the "Re:". If
that then works, maybe she can make a macro so that she doesn't have to
manually edit every single message she writes. Maybe we'll get lucky and
the backup threading won't need the "Re:".

Judy Russell informs me the "thread by subject" option is now turned
on. So now, in addition to checking the "Message-ID" and "References"
headers in the internet routing text, the software will search for a
"Re:" in the subject line and attempt to attach a reply to the most
recent same-named thread.

However, this only works if there's a "Re:" in the subject line. Mike
King informs me that it is possible to write a macro to insert that
automatically in TAPCIS, but only if the Subject Line is not already at
maximum length, in which case it would fail. In this case I think we'll
have to live with a few orphaned threads.

Reading the list supporting the gateway hack, it's possible to change
the code to do that, but I'm not sure if Judy intends on doing that.

I don't know how many people are still using CompuServe Mail (HMI). I
know Dodi is, but I've stopped.
