The truth IS stranger than fiction!!

This past Sunday, one of our officers was dispatched to attend a "marine" incident.

Further investigation revealed the following:

Complainant advised he went fishing. He was trolling along the shore in about 80 feet of water (few hundred feet from shore) when he noticed a "cute looking bear" swimming towards his boat. He watched it for a short time then looked at his down rigger. When he turned away the bear closed the distance to the trolling boat.

Complainant turned to find the bear at the side of the boat. Bear pulled himself onto gunwhale of boat. Complainant hit bear with a paddle. Bear growled and came on board and towards the owner. He abandoned ship! He dove out of the boat. The bear went to where the owner was seated and struck the throttle lever causing the boat to accellerate.

The boat began to cork screw towards the shore. The boat struck the shore with such force that the bear broke the front seat back partially off the stand, broke the rod holder, bent the fish finder back off the stand and ejected the bear. The bear went up along the shore away from the lake. The boat, with the motor still on full forward broke free of shore and corkscrewed around the narrows and a bay until coming to a rest on a rocky shoreline with the motor smashing against the rocks until it became disabled.

There was corse black hair consistant with that of a bear found by police in two areas of the boat, at the entry site and off the back of the front seat.

The complainant is well known to both of the investigating officers and is known to be a reliable and honest person.
