View Full Version : [Dixonary] ROUND 1615 (TRAGOPAN): A late-arriving vote

Hugo, thanks for tracking down the trail of Nancy's message, received 42
minutes past final deadline (which was already a greater-than-normal one,
38 hours, because of another commitment of mine).

Apparently Nancy's message took just over an hour to reach my mailbox.

If this is typical (or at least possible) when posting votes at tapcis.com,
then perhaps those voting there should take this into account and set their
own personal deadlines at least an hour earlier than the announced time.

I don't know about "typical", but I've witnessed delays in BOTH directions.
The obvious solutions are:

1) ALL voters (not just those who vote at tapcis.com!) set their personal
deadlines at least an hour earlier than the announced time (but to be
honest, I'm not sure if one hour would be enough), or
2) The dealer picks up the votes until at least an hour after the announced
time (but to be honest, I'm not sure if one hour would be enough), or
3) The dealers check both the tapcis.com forum and the Cory group (either
online or by e-mail) after the deadline to make sure that they'll never miss
a vote that is still "in transit" between the two locations.

Best, Hugo

The primary "delay" is in yahoo delivering mail to individual accounts.
This delay can be as short as a few seconds and as long as a few hours,
depending on timing.

This delay affects people who read their mail on their personal email
clients via a pop3 or other account; it also affects www.tapcis.com
which reads its mailing list mail from a pop3 account.

Messages emailed to the list OR posted on www.tapcis.com show up on the
group's web interface immediately (or at least very promptly) unless
they sit in the moderation queue, an event that is becoming less
frequent as we add those new addresses.

Bottom line: the dealer should (if they are able) review the web
interface to the yahoo group (not tapcis.com) as they close the
deadline, since this is the only reliable location to get last-minute
votes without a (possible) delay of up to a few hours.

This is the correct answer... checking tapcis.com shouldn't be
necessary, except when posts get stuck in the moderation queue.
Checking at the cory group is absolutely necessary because Yahoo is
horribly slow at delivering mail (and frequently delivers it out of
sequence, too.)

Ummm... i thought we more or less decided (somewhere among the zillions of
past messages, before your round) that the shoe is on the other foot:

* It's the *dealer*'s responsibility to either have a peek on the other site
once the voting deadline is past, or else be prepared to count additional
votes as valid as long as it can be demonstrated they reached one of the
game's venues in time.

* It's not the player's responsibility to check their votes reached a venue
for the game other than the one they're posting to themselves.

Any of tapcis.com (web), cory (web) and cory (by mail) are valid places to
post game stuff to, that's the whole point of this back and forth mirroring
we have in place now. Going to the web once, and only if you're the dealer,
just to mop up the last bits of game, is not that big an imposition, is it?

For the present round, i feel that Nancy's votes for 10 and 13 should simply
be counted, and i hope Mike does so. If this throws off the calculation who
deals next we better disregard *that* aspect, because the new word is up
already.

An hour may not be sufficient. I have had times when emails from
yahoogroups arrived nearly 8 hours after they were sent.

I would agree with Marijke here. Let me repeat some earlier comments
about the mirroring:

Tapcis.com votes go to the list immediately. Any delay (more than a few
minutes) in this process is only due to moderated messages, which only
happens with new players who aren't members of the yahoogroups list.

Emails from the list are viewable at the yahoogroups website
immediately, even when they may take minutes or hours to be delivered to
personal mailboxes, and to the tapcis.com website.

The dealer should/must check the yahoogroups website "messages" section
shortly after the voting deadline. Any other source is subject to
unpredictable delays. Checking tapcis.com is nice, but the rare misses
there can easily be corrected later.
