Why do the subject lines keep changing on this subject? It's very
confusing! :-o

Roberta, I checked some other sources, in addition to the one Dan cited,
and they all seem to confirm that (a) CME is not uncommon (one source terms
it a "well-known complication") following cataract surgery, and (b) usually
the outcome is spontaneous recovery--although, as noted, that can take a
number of months.

Meantime, there are medications. Besides corticosteroids, which you say
you're leery of, they include various NSAIDs (pronounced "ENsades"; stands
for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) to treat the inflammation that's
the basic cause of the condition. They include both systemic and topical
(drops) products.
