Just a quick note to say I'll be away from midday Thursday
BST to Monday evening BST, so don't expect a vote on the
current word. It's our annual British Barbershop
Convention.

Sing for your supper. Have a wonderful time, Tim.

I was gratified to be able to answer promptly, and I did. I said I didn't
know.

Have a great time! We, too, will be away (but I'm planning to take my laptop <G>) -- our daughter is graduating from law school; our granddaughter will be in a dance recital; and we will celebrate both the graduation and our granddaughter's fifth birthday at a party on Sunday. I'm tired just thinking about it!

Judy:
I, too, have a child who is a lawyer.
Oh, the shame, the shame!
Some people here know my stale joke that when people ask me what my son
does for a living, I tell them he plays piano in a Hotel Street, Honolulu,
house of ill repute. That's because I'm ashamed to let people know he's a
lawyer.

OK, that's stale and not very funny.

By the way MY oldest granddaughter is going to be 34 in August.

<< I, too, have a child who is a lawyer.
<< Oh, the shame, the shame!

LOL! That reminds me of a former neighbor who, as a small child, was ashamed that her father owned an extremely successful scrap-metal business ("junk yard"), so she told her class that he was a police officer. For many years our daughter fought going to law school because she feared graduating as a "lawyer." Finally, she learned that you "play the game" for three years and then do your own thing. <G>

<< By the way MY oldest granddaughter is going to be 34 in August.

Stephanie, our lawyer-to-be, will be 38 in August. (Doesn't that make you feel REALLY old? <G>) She earned her bachelor's and master's degree, did all her Ph.D. coursework, and then took the LSAT instead of taking her comps. Oh, well. She has unique background, as she has been employed by two college campuses (UAlbany, and UConn), in positions that include her current one -- Director of the Rainbow Center at UConn -- a full-time position that she was able to reduce to 20 hours per week while she attended law school. She'll go back to full-time after the bar exam and will stay there till December, when she becomes vested in the pension system. So she doesn't have to grab the first job that comes along . . . and we wonder whether she'll work strictly as an attorney or perhaps take a position in which she can utilize her law degree AND all her great experience. Time will tell. We don't ask too many questions -- the kiss of death!! (We also hope she, her partner, and our grandd!
aughter will move back to the Albany area -- another subject we don't bring up. <G>)

It is my impression that only a small percentage of law school graduates
actually practice law in the conventional sense. My son acts more as a
negotiator and trouble shooter for his clients than as a lawyer as such. He
has practiced law including criminal law in the past, but not recently. My
"little boy" will greet his 60th birthday in August. He has an older
brother. I don't usually feel 84 except when I first get up in the morning
or when I try to walk very far with my lousy back.
It sounds to me that your daughter is really an accomplished scholar!

Well, she apparently likes to educate herself. <G> We're wondering whether she'll try to complete her Ph.D. now. Oy, vey!!

Apropos to nothing, but a story I like, is a young Ph.D. candidate at
U.S.C. whose thesis had to do with the trek of a group of English LSD
(Latter Day Saints or Mormons) who crossed the Atlantic and walked to
Deseret (Salt Lake City) without losing a single person. He was taking his
oral exam when he was asked, "Do you think that you as a Mormon can be
unprejudiced about the history of the church?"
His answer was, "Madam, do you think that as a gentile, you could be
unprejudiced about the history of the church?"
That ended the exam. He was awarded his degree.

It was a wonderful weekend, although we got a little wet and muddy yesterday. And we now have a "Doctor of Laws" in our family! Next comes the bar exam . . .
