Round 1708 was one of those where everything that could go wrong, did
go wrong.
It was I think the first round ever where a word had to be pulled
because there were too many DQs, AFTER the defs had been posted. That
disposed of GLADDON, the stinking iris.
Then came GOOSANDER. I thought it had potential for some witty defs
("a cross between...", "a kind of sauce...") but it turned out that
everyone but me knows that it's a big duck.
I finally shook free the DQ demon with GRYKE (only 1 DQ). But I had
other demons to contend with. My computer froze, and after restarting
it, my Coryphæus database was corrupt, so I had to reconstruct
the round. And when I came to tally the results I found that one-third
of the submitters hadn't voted.
Chivvying the players to vote was a mistake, because it resulted
chiefly in more votes for 11, the limestone crack, which comes from
Chambers 9th. It collected more votes than any other def. The
unkindest cut was from Russ, who voted for it because "it looks like
a Keating def". And to think I chose it because "the dissolvent effect
of rain" sounded hopelessly lame!
The extended deadline also allowed Tim Bourne ("corncrake")
to edge Dodi Schultz's natural 4 ("choke, strangle") into coveted
second place, which she shares with Bill Hirst.
