View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Road Runner/CompuServe problem, cont'd

This will be a repeat message to anyone who contacted me privately,
but I thought I'd toss the info out to everyone:

I just did a lot of troubleshooting, and here's what I found:

If I send an email to a CompuServe address from my Road Runner (RR)
account via RR Webmail or Outlook Express, it goes through.

If I send an email to a CompuServe address from my email client
(Express Plus) using my RR account, it does not go through. The
Express Plus tech rep said that if the email is leaving the queued-
messages folder, then it was definitely sent.

I'm using a new computer, so I went back to my old computer and did
all the above tests with the same results, so it's not my computer
having some weird setting. The old computer worked fine for emails
before this recent problem with Tony's "deal."

RR checked to see if there are any blocks on my account, and the
answer was "No." But if there were, my emails wouldn't go from the
Web or Outlook Express to CompuServe since I'd still be using RR.

CompuServe claims that they do *not* block anyone. But even if they
did, again, my emails wouldn't go from the Web or Outlook Express to
CompuServe since I'd still be using RR. Meanwhile, my email goes
everywhere but to CompuServe and the problem only exists from one
email program.

Any suggestions?

And since it's arriving at some other users' computers, it works. The
key here appears to be that your Express Plus is attaching some sort of
routing header to your mail that CompuServe has chosen to filter out.
What do you expect from something made by "Chaos Software"? ;)

Check all the possible settings you can for outgoing messages, and
experiment with options. Some ideas:
- Text vs. HTML
- Type of MIME encoding
- Message priority
- With/without antivirus screening

Hi, Dan!

Thanks for your response.

Exactly!

I'm not sure why you said that . . . but CompuServe claims they are not filtering out anything (or blocking anything). I noticed that Tony successfully received a message from me in mid-January.

I just had another troubleshooting thought: I'm going to have a tech rep at Chaos Software send an email from Express Plus to my CompuServe account and see what happens.

Do you see anything weird below?

X-MimeOLE: Express Plus v 2
X-Account: Road Runner - J

A poor attempt at humor. I would expect chaotic results from a company
so named! Honestly, that is the name Bill Gates should have used for
his company.

Nope. It's entirely possible that because of the great mail merge
capabilities of Express Plus, it might be a favorite software suite of
spammers, and thus shows up frequently enough in Bayesian filtering to
be automatically marked as spam by CompuServe's filters.

I wasn't sure whether you were being funny . . . or knew something about the company that I don't know. They are the developers of my PIM, Time & Chaos, also. That's where the name came from. They were originally Isbister -- which didn't refer to much of anything.

Oh, you mean the filters they claim they don't use? <G>
