[Dixonary] May I ask you a favor?

Hi all,

Since you are all interested in language AND quite adept at English, I'd like to ask you for a favor.

Together with a friend, I founded a new company, a little over two years ago. Lately, the company website appears to start attracting hits from outside the Netherlands. Since we don't see any need to limit our business to just the Netherlands, we decided to create an English version of our web site. Unfortunately, we can't afford to pay a translator for this, so we had to do it ourselves.

The first draft is now finished. And the favor I'd like to ask of you, is to have a look at our site, and let me know if you see any gross errors, stupid spelling mistakes or disturbing style faults.

The draft version of our biliungual site is temporarily uploaded to http://www.perFact.info/draft/En. (I'll move it to www.perFact.info/En when I'm confident that most errors are gond). I would very much appreciate if you could take a look and let me know any possible improvements. Please mail me directly at hugo (AT) perFact (DOT) info, so that we won't clutter the disonary list and the Tapcis boards with this.

Thanks for your GREAT feedback. I have considered all your suggestions,
incorporated most of them, rejected a few and I have rewritten some parts if
I felt that your criticism was justified but wasn't happy about the
suggested alternatives. The result, if you're interested, is now online at
http://www.perFact.info/draft/En. It will move to it's permanent location
(www.perFact.info/En) when my partner has reviewed it.

I have received much more feedback than I ever expected, and much faster. I
appreciate this VERY much!!

Hugo, I'm not sure if any of my suggestions were helpful, but all the
things that had bothered me are no longer present.
I think that the combination of your excellent English and your wisdom in
asking for help have resulted in a clear, cogent article that doesn't
offend my ear. I disagree with Judy's suggestion that you change to
American spelling, as I mentioned in my original critique. Since you are
for now aiming primarily at a British audience, the use of "s" rather than
"z" is proper and wise.

That was why I mentioned "American" spelling -- I missed reference to the British audience and wasn't certain exactly to whom this was directed. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product!

They most definitely were!!

I'm actually aiming at an international audience, with no preference for
either British or US. (Or Canadian, Australian, or whatever).

Business outside of the Netherlands is usually carried out by e-mail and
phone. I don't care where the mail goes and I don't care whether I'm paid in
dollars or pounds.

But since it's impossible to have a spelling that's correct in both British
English and American English, I had to make a choice. I decided to go with
what I was taught in school - and that's British English.

One last trivial comment -- if you force images to have a border, you should not end up with the text appearing to butt up directly against the pictures <g>. This is most noteworthy on the staff page with your esteemed image.
