Do you remember that in the early 1960s, there was a rush of service
(military) personnel to stand in by-elections. It was an easy way of
getting out of the Army, or other service, without serving your full
time, as serving personnel who stood for election to Parliament were
automatically discharged, and losing your deposit was cheaper than
buying yourself out. ISTR that the rules were changed soon afterwards
to close this loophole.
