Why have to stash the lists somewhere?

Why can't the updater (whether every ten rounds, as Scott did, or at some
other interval) just e-mail the updated lists to all players?

Seems real simple, to me. What am I missing?

Fine by me if that is what people want - even other formats if anyone wants (and specifies to me)

What you're missing is that

a) sending email to all players, un-asked for, is spam

b) a lot of players use Coryphæus which has its own built in used-words
database

c) many people are on always-on broadband connexion and prefer to just
peek at a nicely formatted interactive searchable table on a web
(which is there on Paul's site) rather than reading a text file

There are good reasons we never used to send it round by email, but put it
up for download. Then who wants it can come and get it when it suits them.

I'm sure that now you've expressed an interest, Johnny is nice enough to
email it to you, and to everybody else who asks him to. I just don't think a
blanket unasked-for mailing to "all" players is a good idea.

And i think uploading it (as well) is still a good idea. For one thing, that
way its existence is not hidden. A new player who gets the deal within ten
rounds (it happens) will not fall in between mailings, but will have been
able to find and download the list.

Also, many email programs merge attachments into a message if they are text..
For that reason (and various others) some people prefer a download option to
be available.

As a returning player who has not been for over 1000 rounds ... let me offer another prepsective.

If I ever get/have to deal again, that is the only time when will I really need the complete list. At other times, it is at best an interesting file to download and review occasionally.

I know I have dealt in the past (long ago in the past) ... it could have been before the name of the game was changed to Dixonary by Howard B. I do recall one player that round (Neil Rubenking) complaining when the results were not posted 5 minutes after the voting dadline passed :) He said that he had been checking every five minutes looking for the results ... and I don't think he was either the winner or the real winner :) That time I tallied the results using the primitive, but effective, low-tech method of pencil-and-paper. Like I said, the "dark ages" :)
