So the truth is that it is NOT TAPCIS's fault at all that the sender's name
doesn't appear in the TAPCIS headers for Email.

Hmmm... is there an antecedent to this message?

It does look like things are not attaching at all when they come in from Cory (though SOME of them do... I wonder what makes the difference?)

I've given this message a different subject, but this software (unlike the old forum) will still attach it to the thread if I say it's a "reply"... maybe some subtle title difference is breaking the threads?

Hi Mike,

You wrote: >>Hmmm... is there an antecedent to this message?<<

But since you didn't quoteback or otherwise indicate what message you were
replying to, I had to hunt through several interface to find out what "this
message" means.

Mike, AND OTHERS!!!:

Please keep in mind that there are basically three different interfaces for
Dixonary now:
1. On www.tapcis.com - this one is threaded (but see below!), but it's not
used by many of the players;
2. On groups.yahoo.com/group/coryphaeus - this one is threaded, but since
almost all messages are entered through an e-mail portal, the Yahoo software
has to use some AI to find out if a message is a reply to another message or
the start of a new thread. When using this site in threaded mode, it doesn't
take long to see that this AI is flaky;
3. Via e-mail messages dispatched by and sent to the Yahoo groups software.
E-mail in itself is not threaded. Some mail clients allow a threaded disply,
but they'll suffer the same problems that the Yahoo groups software has in
recognising what message one is replying to.

As you see, only the tapcis.com interface has proper, reliable threading -
but only if all players would use that interface, which they don't. Messages
posted at the Yahoo groups site or submitted to Yahoo by e-mail are copied
over to the tapcis.com site - and then, they still suffer the same threading
problems.

After many years of enjoying the luxury of TAPCIS, where quotebacks were
hardly ever needed, we'll all have to get used to our new venues. Since the
threading obviously doesn't work flawlessly in all cases, I think that we
should all try to get ourselved used to
* always include the name of the person you're replying to, plus enough of
the original text (either quoted or paraphrased) that everyone knows what
you're responding to, and
* always sign the messages with our name or initials.

Back to your question, Mike: I received your message in e-mail. On the Yahoo
groups web site, it is obviously attached in the wrong position of a thread
that might or might not be the correct thread. On tapcis.com, it is located
as a reply to Guerri Steven's message:

>> So the truth is that it is NOT TAPCIS's fault at all that the sender's
name
>> doesn't appear in the TAPCIS headers for Email.
>>
>> Guerri

My guess is that this is the message you actually responded to.

> Hmmm... is there an antecedent to this message?

To answer your question: yes, there is an antecedent to this message; the
last days, we've had a complete discussion on whose fault it is that the Fm:
line in TAPCIS doesn't show the same address as the From field in e-mail
clients such as Outlook - and the conclusion was that CompuServe's HMI
interface had no room to accomodate all the various header fields used for
Internet mail. I'm not sure what the exact message is that Guerri responded
to, but I hope that this gives you enough information to know the context of
his remark.

Best, Hugo

The threading relies on internal tracking numbers in the email. Most
modern clients (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc.) keep that info which
allows threading to be kept.

Older clients, and TAPCIS in particular, apparently don't, as the
new/stranded messages in tapcis.com are primarily TAPCIS users. Even if
the subject is the same.

How does *this* thread?

Wow! That message threaded perfectly in tapcis.com. You said you were using "Eudora"... does that mean you were posting directly from Eudora sending to the yahoo group?

So the truth is that it is NOT TAPCIS's fault at all that the sender's name doesn't appear in the TAPCIS headers for Email.
It is not TAPCIS' fault that the original sender's "From" address does not appear in the TAPCIS "From" line. TAPCIS can only report what HMI gives to it. One will need to inspect the set of full Internet headers to determine the true "From" address.

Yes, Mike, there was an antecedent to my message about whose fault it is that the sender's name doesn't appear in TAPCIS Email headers. The problem is that I posted my message via TAPCIS via CompuServe Email. This breaks the threads in TAPCIS.COM.

Once Hugo gave me the clue, I was able to figure out the context, and respond to the question.
