It's out. MS, apparently bowing to protests of their decision to wait until scheduled-update-Tuesday, released the fix a few minutes ago on their "Windows Update" site.

(I was able to download it, but went I tried about 90 seconds later to download it to Carole's computer, the website was inaccessible. The word is getting out quickly, so there may be delays.)

In this post (http://www.tapcis.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12247#post12247) in the Non-Tap Technical Forum I have a link to download the patch from Microsoft without using Windows Update and I list instructions for removing the unofficial patch (discussed earlier in that same thread) if you have already applied it.

Thanks, Sidney--

I didn't apply the unofficial patch because after reading about six alarming warnings, I finally learned (from the PC Mag website, I think) that the problem is pretty much limited to the Windows Fax and Image viewer; IOW, it's not a virus that you'd be likely to get by logging on here, or even to the Salon website. :)

For that reason, I was willing to hang around until Tuesday.

Still, I'm happy enough that they released it today.
