(Another nugget from my research this morning) - Age of the salmon returning from the sea depends on the species

Most are 4-6-9 years but the Pacific Northwest species can return as a "hook" (hooknose) after 18 months or a "jack" after 6 months
- terms defined by the shape of the jaw. Which (hook or jack) it is depends upon its birth size according to one paper. Necessarily
the jacks are smaller and cannot succeed in the mating battles against the hooks ("fighters") who weigh about 5 times as much so
instead they breed as "sneakers" - hiding behind the female and sneaking in and depositing sperm when she lays (having been
stimulated by a fighter
