View Full Version : [Dixonary] email visibility

Paul, or other moderators,

My "pinkmarijke" Yahoo! user ID, in the list of coryphaeus group members
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/coryphaeus/members (and in messages
posted by that ID) shows my full email address, in machine readable web pages.

My latest ID (thanks), also in messages posted by mail, does not show my
full email -- which is the way i like it.

I can't figure out how to hide the email address of the "pinkmarijke" ID in
the membership list (i went to my edit-my-profile thingy in Yahoo!, and it
says i already opted to hide the email).

For lurkers confused by all this: my email is marijke, followed by "at"
symbol, followed by maths.bham.ac.uk -- i just don't want it in one piece in
machine readable form anywhere on the web, what with all the spam address
harvesting bots around.

Hi Marijke,

>>I can't figure out how to hide the email address of the "pinkmarijke" ID in the membership list (i went to my edit-my-profile thingy in Yahoo!, and it says i already opted to hide the email).<<

Triggered by your message, I took a peek at the management tools that are now at my disposal. It appears that the group is set to not allow members to hide their e-mail address. I'm not sure why Paul did this. Maybe it was a change he had to make in order to get the exchange between the group and the new Tapcis Forum running?

Anyway, I can't change this, so you'll have to wait until Paul sees your message before this can be changed.

(And FTR, I prefer to hide my e-mail as well)

Best, Hugo

Hugo, thanks for exploring this.

This is what it says:
Allow members to hide their email address from the group.
Your group will not be able to use the Polls feature. Members who hide
their email address will not be able to post messages via email. Once
you have selected this option, you may not change it later.

An early idea was that we could use the polls feature to tabulate the
votes instead of doing it by hand, and I did not want to disable that.

More relevant now, is that anyone who hides their email address won't
be able to post on tapcis.com and have the message echoed here,
because it will bounce.

If that's what the group wants then I'll change it, but it's an
irreversible change and may end up making the echoing system unusable.
Maybe Dan can use his test group to find out how bad the damage would
be if we did this.

The Members page is only accessible to other members. In the Messages
section, which is public, your address is truncated, unless of course
some email client helpfully puts it in the message body at the top of
a quoteback.

I was just as concerned as you are about getting spammed, which is why
my address on this forum is an easily discardable forwarding address,
coryphaeus (AT) prodigycomputing (DOT) com. But the nearly 3 years the group has
been up, I haven't had a single spam to that address.

As an alternative, you can change your profile: add whatever other
throwaway address you like, and make it your primary address.

I don't believe it can be a fake or syntactically incorrect address
because you have to prove it's real by replying to a message Yahoo
sends it, and it is also where the emailed posts go. It can't be an
address you shut down after verifying it, because emails to it will
bounce.

But if it does get harvested and spammed, then you can throw it away
and get another.

*Irreversible*? Oh god don't do that.

I'm surprised though, is that documentation talking about the same thing?

- my "pinkmarijke" identity has full email address showing

- my other identity(*) cloaks the address as marijke@...

so it seems to be the case that some people (or rather, some versions of the
same people) *are* allowed a cloaked mailing address already. Curiouser and
curiouser.

(*) recently added by a moderator i presume, for which my thanks, and yes, i
know the way our mail server loosely puns between for.mat.bham.ac.uk and
maths.bham.ak.uk is a pain <g>.

Only if i mail to the list (which ends up as from the same alias of me that
has the cloaked/truncated address in the member list). If i post on the web
(with my Yahoo! identity) the full address shows in the posts as well!

Well yes, that's true, i won't be overrun overnight <g>. I could just not
post from the web anymore, so it won't show up in any more posts, and the
membership list is, as you say, not public.

By the way, if i'm a member twice now (with effectively twice the same
address), how come i'm not getting the list twice in my mailbox? Inquiring
minds...

Hi Marijke,

I'm not sure if I understand all this (in fact, I'm pretty sure I DON'T
<g>) - but since Paul and Dan are gone, I'll try to answer at least some of
the questions.

If I log in to the group with my own identity, I see all e-mail addresses. I
guess that this is because I am a moderator.

If I log out from Yahoo, then visit the group (as guest), the member list is
unavailable; the message list shows truncated email addresses
("marijke@...") on some messages, and clickable names that link to the
profile ("pinkmarijke" - links to profiles.yahoo.com/pinkmarijke). However,
clicking either of your latest messages in this thread reveals your full
address on the from line (though both the names and the spelling of
mat/maths are different), whereas clicking your message in the "I'm here,
are you?" thread shows an abbreviated address.

As a final test, I made myself a new Yahoo account and approved it for
membership of the Cory group, so that I could see what "regular members"
see. The information shown on the messages list and the information shown
when clicking on individual messages remains the same. The only difference
is that this non-mod member can now see the list of members - and here, the
e-mail address is hidden (displayed as "name@...") for all members.

To wrap it up - your three latest messages (two in this thread, one in the
I'm here, are you thread - all posting within the same 5 minutes) all
display differently. Do you remember how you posted each of them? Did you
use the TAPCIS Forum for one or more? Did you type and post your reply on
the Yahoo groups web interface? Did you just send a mail? If so, from which
address?

> (*) recently added by a moderator i presume, for which my thanks, and

I'm not sure, but I *THINK* that a new identity is added automaGically if
the messages feed from the TAPCIS Forum includes a message from a sender
with unknown identity. But Paul and Dan will probably correct me if I'm
wrong.

Yes, my experiments show this to be true. Though I doubt that any e-mail
harvesting 'bot will actually click all the individual messages, you are
correct that this should (if possible) be corrected. I therefor think it's
very important to first find out what exactly causes your address to show on
some messages and be hidden on others.

> By the way, if i'm a member twice now (with effectively twice the same

Because only the pinkmarijke identity is set to receive emails from the
group - the setting for the marijke@... address is to receive no email.

I'm in an internet cafe for the next hour and will try to type what I
know. This was too much to hand-write on my palmtop. :)

1. I think (someone else can confirm) that only your own email address
shows up in "full" when you are looking at the member list. All other
email addresses have the extension truncated. (Unless you are a
moderator, then you see them all.)

2. Your full email address shows up in the "From:" line when you send a
message to the group. Many people, when they reply to your message, may
quote your full email address into a message. This is the most likely
place your address will be "visible" in this group.

3. I've never received any spam at an address I have used with Yahoo
groups. Spammers target easier places like hotmail and aol.

4. In order to get your full email address, someone has to join this
group. That "someone" will have to be approved by a moderator to join,
and thus is a Dixonary player.

I hope all this is correct... if not, my apologies. (And yes, I am the
one who added your second marijke address, since your posts at
tapcis.com kept hitting the moderation queue.)

Hi Dan,

>>1. I think (someone else can confirm) that only your own email address

addresses have the extension truncated. (Unless you are a moderator, then
you see them all.)<<

That's how I though it should work. But my experiments showed something
else. However, I tried it another time, and now I was indeed unable to see
any full message when browsing the Coryphaeus group while not logged in. I
guess that this afternoon, my computer was plagued by some leftover cookie
crumbs...

>>2. Your full email address shows up in the "From:" line when you send a

Correct. (In fact, some group interfaces [such as Google Groups] will even
mask e-mail addresses in the body of a message. I'm not sure what yahoo
does. As an experiment, allow me to insert a non-existant e-mail address
here: notme (AT) nobody (DOT) com . I'll check this message on groups.yahoo.com and on
www.tapcis.com and see what happens!)

>>4. In order to get your full email address, someone has to join this
group. That "someone" will have to be approved by a moderator to join, and

If e-mail addresses in the body of the message are not masked, then a
visitor could be able to see it as well (no joining required to read e-mail
messages). But it would be way too much work for spam address harvesters -
as you said, there are plenty easier targets out there.

If e-mail messages in the body are masked (or if we all take care never to
quote an e-mail address in any message in the Cory group or in the Parlor),
then even other members won't be able to see your address. Only moderators.

Best, Hugo

In the e-mail copy I've received, the e-mail address is not masked. Can
other confirm that they see the complete e-mail address in their e-mail as
well? (Maybe I get an unfiltered version because I'm a moderator?)

On groups.yahoo.com, when viewing the message without being logged in, the
domain is replaced by three dots; I can click the truncated address, but
then I'm taken to a login prompt. When viewing the message as a regular
member, I also see the truncated version of the address; when clicking on
it, I'm taken to a screen where I can send an e-mail message, but I still
can't see the e-mail address. When viewing the message as a moderator, I get
to see the complete, unmasked address.

I'm still waiting for the message to show up on tapcis.com (I had expected
it some fifteen minutes ago, at a quarter past ten [Dutch time], but it's
apparently delayed), so I can't tell how the address looks at the tapcis
site. In other messages, I've seen @ symbols being replaced by "(AT)", so I
expect something similar in this case - but I'd like to be sure.

Anyway, since only the moderators of the yahoo group get to see the complete
e-mail addresses (even when they are used in the body of a message), it
appears that Marijke's and other's addresses are safe from harvesters.

Does this answer your concerns, Marijke?

I can see the compete email address in Yahoo! Groups when I receive messages via email. But if it will make anyone feel better, I have had no problems with spam as a result of my Yahoo! Groups memberships . . . and I'm on multiple groups. I guess as long as the group members are "reputable," you're okay. <G> When I view the same messages on the Web, the email addresses are truncated.

And since membership of the Coryphaeus group must be approved by one of the
moderators, you can rest assured that only "reputable" people will be
allowed in. (Of course, we'll make an exception for Fernando if he ever

Well, it has arrived at tapcis.com. I can now confirm that the @ symbol in an e-mail address is replaced by (AT). And the dot is replaced by (DOT). So the fake e-mail address I included in my message shows up here as notme (AT) nobody (DOT) com. I guess that should be enough to fool most spambots.

Yes, that's what i mean. It shows on the messages (in web view on the Yahoo!
site), perhaps not in bulk view but definitely on single message per page view.

> (though both the names and the spelling of mat/maths are different),

Name: i played around changing it in between thise messages (thought that
updating my "profile" might stir things here into updating and accepting my
profile's hide-my-email setting, but no).

for.mat.bham.ac.uk versus maths.bham.ac.uk: known issue. One is physical
server address, which may change one day, other is virtual address that maps
to it. Our local techie asks us to use the latter, to cushion any short
notice server changes, so our correspondents will always have a valid
address for us. And then the system searches and replaces it in everybody's
Reply-To header before the recipient gets to see it <ggg>.

> whereas clicking your message in the "I'm here,
> are you?" thread shows an abbreviated address.

Exactly. My other identity (the one posting by email, added no doubt because
of the for.mat v maths mismatch) does have a cloaked email (@...)

I like the thorough approach :)

Yes, as i said -- the ones in this thread (except THIS message, and future
ones) were typed in at the Yahoo group website (that entails the Yahoo!
pinkmarijke identity, and email shows).

Pretty much everything else by email to the list (which means the other id,
and email is cloaked).

> Did you use the TAPCIS Forum for one or more?

Yes, but i can't access that anymore now, and besides they aren't mirrored here.

I've also posted messages at the tapcis.com site, and they *would* mirror
here, but recently i have only posted to non-Parlor sections there, which
don't mirror here.

Ah! Could you switch it so "pinkmarijke" DOESN'T get messages and
"marijke@..." DOES get messages??? Please tell me after you've done so (i
cannot tell, as they both go to effectively the same email account).

Or can i do it myself? I've edited pink's settings (or tried to), wouldn't
know how to edit "@..."'s settings though -- probably can't if it has no
Yahoo! id.

If it works i can either saddle "pink" with my throwaway compuserve.com
address, and/or unsubscribe and re-subscribe her, to see if that gives me a
second chance to get pink's settings right. I don't want to unsubscribe pink
permanently (or kill her off altogether). It is useful to have an identity
that Yahoo! recognises and allows to view the web site, in case i deal and
want to gather last minute votes.

I'm not sure if you've already catched up (caught up??) with all message
sent in the last hours. I've later repeated the tests, and now the e-mail
address was truncated in all possible views, both when logged in as a normal
member or as a guest. The difference between the first test and the second
test, was that the second time I closed and reopened my browser window each
time I logged in or out (I would have achieved the same with a forced
reload - Ctrl-F5 for Internet Explorer). When I saw your address while not
logged in, I was looking at a cached page instead of a freshly loaded one.

If you still find a way to see a complete e-mail address on the Yahoo groups
site, either as guest or while logged in as a normal member, then please
tell me the exact steps I need to take to reproduce it.

Yeah. But as stated above - it was not thorough enough, unfortunately :(

Sorry for the confusion, my bad - I meant the new tapcis.com Forum, not the
old (HMI) TAPCIS Forum. Anyway, since I've now found that it was just my
cache playing funny games, it's not relevant anymore where you posted from.

I've just done that. I assume you want individual e-mails for this one as
well? Let me know whether this works (just to be sure, I'll cc a copy of
this mail directly to your address).

The pinkmarijke identity was set to receive plain text mails. The
marijke@... was set to receive mails in HTML format. I couldn't find any way
for me to change that setting. Also note that the latter address uses the
for.mat.bham... version, not the maths.bham... version, in case it matters.

I have no idea. I could click the link for "Request Profile" that shows
after this identity - from what I've gathered, you'd then receive an e-mail
inviting you to fill out your profile. I've never actually tried this yet,
since I have no guinea pigs available. If you don't mind, I could use your
marijke@... identity to try this on...

Best, Hugo

I went to do this and someone had already done it.

Aaaaarrrgggghhhh!

( ) ( )
======= ( ) ========= ( ) ========== hurrying to the Yahoo! site
( ) WHOOOSH! ( )

Ah. I have now, in record time

- signed up as new member of Yahoo! (ID icosians)
- gave them the (my given name)@for.mat.bham.ac.uk address
- went to coryphaeus group to become a member
- had it tell me i was a member already under my email address
- allowed it to link the two
- edited my group membership profile, in particular...
- ...switched delivery to non-HTML email.

<phew>. I can't *stand* all those stupid HTML tags littering the text.

> Also note that the latter address uses the

It matters (it only does exact address matches) but i knew what the address
was -- it was the reason this second membership by email address was created
by the group.

Not sure how you could -- the email would go to me. Anyway i was in a hurry <g>.

But i told you above what happened. The user doen't have to do anything,
apart from (1) apply for a Yahoo! ID using *exactly* the same email address
the group has for you as non-Yahoo! member, then (2) try to become a group
member (at the web site). The system will tell you you're already subscribed
and whether you want to enable web access as that same person.

PS -- i've now made pink leave the group altogether, to keep things simple.

Wonder if her messages still show -- will have a look next time.

Thank you! Yes it was Hugo (naturally enough as that conversation was
originally with Hugo). But thanks very much for looking into it, he might
well have been out for the day for example.

Can you guys cover it between you, or do you want another volunteer? I was
on digests when the call for volunteers came, so i only saw it 24 hours later.
