View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 1663: SOCLE Defs

Daniel B. Widdis

Phase one of holiday travels complete. 2 hours to travel 10 miles
through Los Angeles last night. Ugh! And I thought I was beating the
day-before traffic!

Here are nineteen definitions for SOCLE, eighteen of which came from the
creative minds of our players, and one from my dictionary. Vote for TWO
definitions, as a public forum message (in reply to this one), before
the deadline, which will be whenever I arrive in Las Vegas late Friday
night (approximately 9pm PST). That's 60 hours from this posting, which
should be plenty of time for all of you to vote, while still enjoying
your Thanksgiving holiday.

Please watch for my niece, Megan, marching with the Kennesaw Mountain
High School in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. :)

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this
round. Don't look in a dictionary.

1: Pie filling.

2: A small bundle.

3: To gather together.

4: Organ mutation stop.

5: To ooze or bleed in drops.

6: [Fr slang] Clumsy; awkward (soclé).

7: (_Scot._) To gobble; to eat ravenously.

8: Supporting column in a masonry building.

9: A type of bivalve found only in the Indian ocean.

10: A serving dish used in France in the 19th century.

11: A fitting for attaching a turnbuckle to a stanchion.

12: A rock hollow in a desert area, perh. containing water.

13: A rectangular plinth (for a bust, etc) wider than it is high.

14: A brief Biblical passage cited in support of an ethical premise.

15: A brooch made of human hair, often from a deceased relative or
friend (19th C.).

16: 1. A long meeting where everyone gets his say, but in the end nobody
knows what has been decided. 2. The chairman of such a meeting.

17: 1. A plain square block higher than a plinth, serving as a pedestal
for sculpture, a vase, or a column. 2. A plain plinth supporting a wall.

18: A stroke in croquet where an opponent's ball is moved backwards
through a wicket by a ricochet of the struck ball bouncing off any other
ball.

19: The triangular gap between two ligaments which are parallel but
diverge to attach to opposite points on a joint such as the knee or a
knuckle.

Hi Dan,

Great bunch of defs (as usual). After careful consideration, I have chosen
to award my points to the creative authors of

8: Supporting column in a masonry building.

15: A brooch made of human hair, often from a deceased relative or
friend (19th C.).

Best, Hugo

Of the three plinths, 8, 13 and 17, I'll take the shortest (8)and the
longest (17). One of the three has to be it, and I'm superstitious.

Daniel -

Nice selection. I'll try:

10: A serving dish used in France in the 19th century.

and

15: A brooch made of human hair, often from a deceased relative or friend
(19th C.).

Thanks,

Chuck

They're all impossible, but maybe 13 and 17 are slightly
less so.

Well, I have to pick 7 in honor of the holiday, and I'll take 18 also.

I'll tumble for the popular masonry column and the hairy brooch: 8 and
15.
