What's the reason you asked this?

Toni, before the game moved to the Coryphæus group, I copied the wordlist
files off CIS and I gave them the extension .html so that they would open in
a browser. This was at the time when we thought we might have only days,
rather than months, to copy anything of value to a new location. The
emphasis was on speed, rather than taking full advantage of new facilities.

When the game moved and John started uploading the .dix files, I asked if he
wouldn't give them .txt/.html extensions instead. That way, you wouldn't be
forced to download them in order to look at them.

Then I came up with a better solution: put the wordlist in the database
section. This does away with the need for the .dix files to be openable in a
browser. The chief reason for preserving the old format (and name) is for
Dixomatic to download, and so it's probably best left as it is.

People

There seems to be a confusion here about wordlists - maybe partially because I may not be receiving up to 35% of yahoo group posts -
so let me spell out my position

A) I was asked (offered when 'anyone' was asked) to take over maintenance of the wordlists (this is no sweat for me, I am/was
database guru)
B) As .DIX are actually text files I asked then about changing .DIX to anything else and was requested to retain .dix
C) As a favour to anyone who doesn't want to have to log in to yahoo I also put the files on to a website page so a single click
will get the file
D) I am prepared to put them anywhere in any format and any sort-order that anyone wants
E) meanwhile, Paul keeps a database on Cory-yahoo which anyone can also download a report sorted as they wish

Maybe we are trying to be too clever and too helpful. Maybe, with Paul's database we are duplicating effort. It is no skin off my
nose if I don't do it

So, what does anyone want

PS. in fact, because if and when I get to deal I use dixomat which requires .dix files then I will continue to maintain the database
for my own requirements so the only issue for me is about once a month reissuing an email with the links and actually uploading the
files

I'm very happy with your option C - the text files on your website.

Although in my Tapcis years I used to download WORDSABC.DIX from time
to time and refer to it locally, since having a broadband connection
I've found it easier just to open the file online in a browser. I've
never bothered to set up the automatic lookup in Dixomatic.

Further to my last, I've just discovered that I can open WORDSABC.DIX
the the Files section of the Yahoo group in my browser. I didn't have
to set up .DIX as an extension opened by IE - it just did it. So
ignore my vote - there's no real need to have the .txt version on your
website.

The automatic lookup in dixomat merely requires the .dix file to be there in same folder as dixomat + setting the switch on the
options menu

Thanks for the advice on using .DIX file with Dixomatic.
