Dear Dixonarians

The word lists for rounds upto 1660 are now available
WORDSABC.DIX the alphabetic list
WORDS123.DIX the chronological list
( These are of course plain ASCII text files)

They are in the files section of the yahoo Coryphaeus group

If anyone doesn't want to have to log in to get them, I have placed them on a single web-page on my homepage - the following links
apply

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.barrs/wordsabc.dix
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.barrs/words123.dix

or if anyone prefers a zip

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.barrs/wordsdix.zip

If anyone would like them in any other format, just ask, I can probably produce most things quite easily as I have them in a
database and can output in almost any format and order that anyone might want; and... I'm quite happy to do it..

It would be most helpful (the next time I deal, so no rush) if the files
had a .txt extension, so my browser would recognize it and allow me to
open it directly, rather than having to download it first.

John,

I just remembered... you said you used Firefox as a browser. Firefox
has built-in RSS reader functionality, called "Live Bookmarks."

Dan,

John deliberately doesn't put a .txt extension so that browsers _won't_ open
it directly. (I know this because I asked him too.)

But to view the wordlist in a browser directly you can use the version in
the Database section
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/coryphaeus/database?method=reportRows&tbl=1.
This is sortable and searchable.

Txt extensions for wordsfiles.... I can easily do that, but when I took over this task I asked and it seemed to me that people
wanted it 'as was' - what I will do for the moment is to place a .txt set on my homepage link

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.barrs/wordsabc.txt
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.barrs/words123.txt

FYI - the way I have resolved that for me is to make .dix extensions open via notepad on my machine... Then firefox and IE open the
file directly into their own windows

As with email clients, browsers, and even operating systems, we all have
our preferences. In the rare circumstance where I have to check a new
word against the list, I much prefer clicking on the link in my browser
and using my browser's search function (Ctrl+F), as opposed to
downloading a file and navigating the "Open with..." sequence. For
those who don't want it to open directly, a simple right-click and "Save
link as..." (or Save target as, for IE users) accomplishes what they want.

Thanks! That'll probably work for me, especially if the link is
mentioned somewhere in the coryphaeus file structure.

I suppose this would work. It's even more keystrokes and mouse clicks
to set up, something I've been too lazy to do, given the rarity of my deals.

Is there anyone but me who actually wants the wordlist to be available
sortable and searchable in a browser?

I know that some players want to use email exclusively, and for them having
to log onto Yahoo to get information is simply an annoyance, but is there
anyone apart from them?

If not, then I'll stop maintaining it in the Database section, except maybe
periodically, every 25 rounds or so, when I put up the PDFs of the rolling
scores.
