LOL! Johnny, that's wonderful!

THAT led me to the Oxford Dictionary of Abbreviations, which offered:
Rectified Air Speed, Royal Agricultural Society, Royal Asiatic Society, and
Royal Astronomical Society.

Then there's the Facts On File Dictionary of Biotechnology and Genetic
Engineering; in that field, the letters signify "rat sarcoma" (as one of
your dictionaries also suggested).

Cassell's Dictionary of Foreign Words and Phrases agrees with one of the
two defs we found geographically, but not royally: "an Ethiopian governor
or administrator". And adds that the word's Amharic for "head" and comes
originally from Arabic.

I think we know more than we needed to.
