I do hope, Judy, that your docs are just being super-cautious (as mine tend
to; whole lotta defensive medicine goin' on) and that it's nothing very
serious!

Have you had your flu shot yet?

Well, some of it has the potential of becoming serious, but because we discovered it early, my hope would be that we can prevent big future problems. For example, I requested an echocardiogram to rule out a heart defect (patent foramen ovale, or PFO) that *may* cause migraines. Good news: No PFO. Bad news: leaky heart valves and an enlarged aortic root. Had I not requested the echo, heaven only knows when these problems would have been discovered! So now I have a cardiologist!!

Just to give you an idea of my life lately -- last night I noticed much larger than usual floaters in my left eye. This morning, when I saw flashing lights peripherally, I called my retina specialist (yeah, I have one of those). It looks like today's plans will be "ditched" in favor of an office visit.

<< Have you had your flu shot yet?

Tomorrow. That's the appointment I referred to when I set the ending time for "ras." <G>

I had retina trouble back in 1980 - one nearly half-detached, the other showing signs. Both
were operated on then, and have been fine since. I'm sure the technology has improved further
since, but it was pretty impressive even then.

Good luck - hope all goes well.

Judy, you could be lucky with the eye. I also had larger than usual
floaters and the lights. Turned out to be what they call "vitreous
detachments", which are just pieces of the vitreous that come loose.
It's irritating, but I've been told that if this happens, you are
unlikely to get a detached retina.

My husband, on the other hand, did have a detached retina. He waited
until 2 weeks before our scheduled vacation last year to mention his
symptoms to me: a shower of specks and curtain-like vision. I made him
call the eye doctor immediately and tell her it was an emergency because
I was pretty sure it was a detached retina.

So far, no detachment, but the vitreous fluid is pulling away from the back wall of my eye. I guess this will be a wait-and-see deal . . . or should I say *another* wait and see deal. <G>

Thanks for your good wishes.

That's what it is, but my understanding is (from the brochure I was given) that "Flashes that appear all of a sudden or greatly increase in number may be a sign of a problem. They may be caused by the vitreous pulling too hard on the retina. This can make the retina tear or detach from the back of the eye . . . ." OTOH, this may never get worse (I guess).

Following my father's cataract surgeries, he developed a detached retina in each eye, so I was quite familiar with the symptoms and therefore called the doctor *fast*!

Thanks, John. Now there are more issues with my mother. <sigh> You know, it's one thing when you're responsible for your own health and another when it's medical issues for someone else. I'm feeling very inadequate right about now. I'll have to make a lot of calls today.

In my case, I at first thought the flashes of light could be a
reflection of my glasses' frame. Until I went into an absolutely dark
closet and still saw them. Then I called the doctor.

Good luck with yours. I hope they don't get worse in any way. Mine I can
live with. From time to time, though, it will seem as though I'm seeing
something out of the corner of my eye, which is disconcerting.

That's exactly what I thought! So I took off my glasses to see if was still happening . . . and it was. So much for my first theory. <G>

Exactly. The floaters aren't as dark as they were Monday night, but I'm concerned that I could be driving and think there's a bee in the car. That could be very unfortunate. <sigh>

Thanks for your good wishes.
