Here in the U.S. we have a "do not call" list. You can register your
number and supposedly sales people will not call you. We still get a lot
of advertising calls, however. It is, of course, possible that there
would be far more if we were not on the list.

From time to time I will not answer a call, but will write down the
caller's number. I have also tried calling the number, but so far that
has not worked. Either I get a message saying something to the effect
that there is no such number or "all agents are currently busy".

I am wondering if it is possible to report unwanted calls, but my guess
is that there is, in actuality, no way to get the calls stopped, or to
cause the callers to incur some kind of penalty.

Have any of you tried to report unwanted calls? I have no idea how you
would report them.

I have a theory that at least some of the calls are simply to determine
that given phone numbers are real, and picking up the phone identifies
our number as a real number. I also like the calls that play a recorded
message about the wonderfulness of product X and that many of "my
neighbors" have it and are extremely satisfied. With I human caller, I
could of course, say "give me a couple of names so I can ask them about
your product.
