View Full Version : [Dixonary] Rd 2890: New, new word: TAW

Too many DQ's on oakum. So let's try:

>>>>>>>>>> TAW <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

It's a simple word, so it's not surprising that it has multiple
definitions. *This is not the Hebrew letter, related to the game of
marbles, nor a term in Australian slang. *

Please get your DQs to me as soon as possible. But I'll extend the
definition deadline to 11 a.m. EDT or 3 p.m. GMT on Sunday April 29.

I may or may not be able to post until later in the afternoon since I have
a meeting a hour after that. But I'll do my best. Of course, we're just
as likely to need a new, new, new word before that.

Defs and DQs to nancygoat at gmail.com.

Nancy,

If it's not this, and it's not that, then it must be: the strawberry finch, also called the red waxbill.

Or not. We'll know soon enough!

Efrem

P.S. I know the Hebrew letter, and I know the marble, but despite 8+ visits to Australia over the past fifteen years I don't recall hearing it as Australian slang. I don't want to look it up for fear of stumbling onto the definition you have in mind. Would you mind telling us what it's slang for, perhaps with the results?

Ryan,

It's my crown of shame for having sent my fake definition of TAW (the bird) as a public reply to the call for definitions rather than as a private message to the dealer. It's happened to most of us once in a while. The real punishment is having to come up with another definition, because the one we sent by mistake is usually one we thought was pretty good. For reasons that goes back to way before I joined the game, Judy is in charge of awarding them.

The tradition of awarding the Crown to players who posted their def in
public was certainly in place when I started playing in 1994. It used to
be ASCII art, but since we moved to Google Groups, we've been using the
rather fetching jewel-encrusted one which Efrem was awarded. As Efrem
says, we've nearly all received the award at one time or another..
