View Full Version : [Dixonary] Cory "improvement"??

Judy Madnick

In the current round, I had to change the round number. Cory didn't allow me to do that, so since it was early in the round, I deleted the incorrectly numbered round and started a new one with the correct number. However, Cory "told" me that "ras" had already been used . . . even though I had deleted that round.

First . . . am I missing something here? Is there a way to accomplish what I was attempting to do?

If not, I'm wondering whether one or both of these suggestions can be implemented in Cory:

1. Adding the ability to change the round number without making any other changes; and/or

2. Providing the opportunity to delete a round and reuse the word from the deleted round (i.e., Cory will know that if the round is deleted, the word hasn't been used).

This type of problem may not happen often, but when it does, it would be nice to have a "fix."

Thanks!

You can stop Coryphæus from telling you that a word has been used before by
editing the used word list (Edit | Used word list...). Then you won't have
the problem you describe when you create a new round with the same word as
an earlier one. When testing I have to do this all the time, of course, so
it never occurred to me that it isn't exactly obvious.

A facility to change the round number is a bit hard to do. The problem is
that every message, submission, definition and vote refers to the round
number, and furthermore the files all know that the round number must exist.
So this would involve creating a new round, transferring all the messages
etc to the new round, then deleting the old one. Not impossible, but it
would have to be a new dialogue (something like Edit | Change round
number...).

I'll put it on the list.

How do you actually delete it? I had to put something in that field, so I used "ras-no" so that I could change what I called "ras -" back to "ras." <G>

As long as we're putting stuff on the list, can I add a request to read
in definitions from files in "mbox" format (Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird,
kmail (linux), etc.)?

I don't use Cory because my client (Thunderbird) doesn't play the MAPI
game, but it seems like reading in text files from a brand-new folder I
create for each round shouldn't be too hard...

Judy,

Did you get the list problem solved? My understanding was the you use the
"Edit" dropdown menu and select "Used work list". Then just delete 'ras'
from the list by highlighting it, clicking the minus sign and confirming
that you want to delete that record.

Actually, Thunderbird does do MAPI, just not very well. The MAPI
implementation is plain wrong in several places, but I used Coryphæus with
Thunderbird for several deals, until I got tired of the bugs.

The problem with mbox format is that there is no true specification.
However, Coryphæus will read messages in RFC822 format without choking,
which is basically what mbox format is supposed to be. But it doesn't work
with Thunderbird's mailbox files (I just tried) so I suppose Thunderbird has
some variation of its own.

But if you can get Thunderbird to export .eml files, Coryphæus (as of
revision 3.9) will import them. As an alternative, it will get the messages
directly off tapcis.com, no intervening disk file required.

Revision 3.9 is a beta but I will have a new full package uploaded soon.

Ah, the minus sign! Could be --too late now though. I'll save your message for future testing.

Thanks, Chris!

Judy,

I've had a bash at putting in an option to change the round number, but it
appears to run foul of a bug in Paradox: update the round number in the
message/definition table, and the text of the message/definition sometimes
disappears. There doesn't seem to be a workaround, so I've given up on the
issue.

But I have amended the popup you get when Coryphæus tells you that a word
has been used before. You get the option to "use it anyway" which should get
rid of some of the aggravation of having to create a new round when you get
the number wrong.

That's neat!

When I posted the results, I also noticed something that I don't remember from before. First the results are copied to the clipboard (using my method <G>), and then there's another pop-up for the summary. If you choose that, of course, you lose the first clipboard "copy." Are we just supposed to know to ignore the second pop-up?

The second popup is for the alphabetical summary that's intended to go by
email to the scorekeeper (as opposed to the winner-at-the-top summary that
the standard template puts at the bottom of the end-of-round message). I put
this in for Russ many moons ago because the alphabetical summary is easier
to capture.

There's three things you can do. (1) Before dismissing the first popup,
paste the clipboard contents to your posting. Then dismiss it, and paste the
(now different) clipboard contents into an email to the scorekeeper. (2) In
Options | Settings, uncheck Email alpha results. This suppresses the
alphabetical summary altogether. (3) In Options | Messaging, Change private
messages to Ascii file so that they get written out to disk for processing
later.

The clipboard isn't really an ideal way to pass private messages like
acknowledgements from Coryphæus to an email program, because there are so
many of them. As the help says, using the clipboard for private messages may
force you to task-switch between Coryphæus and your message editor tediously
many times.

Originally, all the messages got written to the Tapcis outbox so you didn't
have to worry about pasting from the clipboard. The MAPI interface does the
same for email programs that do MAPI. But if the email program believes you
shouldn't create emails except in the editor it provides, that poses
something of a problem. It's hard to make things seamless when the email
program decides it oughtn't to be seamless.
