[Dixonary] OT: Getting Subscribed

Occasionally I get Email from some entity that I never heard of. Such
messages often, or maybe even always, have an item that says "click here
to unsubscribe". Is there any way to prevent this "subscribing" from
happening in the first place?

I could understand if I ordered something online or visited some site.
But today I got a message from "Conservative News". I cannot imagine how
they got my name.

Very often, those messages are simple spam. They are sent to large
amounts of email adresses harvested or bought from some source or even
randomly generated.

Especially in the latter case, the unsubscribe link will not actually
unsubscribe you because there is no subscription. However, it will
confirm your email as an actually existing email adress, which increases
its value if they want to sell the list of email addresses to other
spammers.
