I have been using my own system for backing up my computer. Basically I
run a .bat file that copies files to an external drive.

I have decided that maybe this is a little too informal. So I have been
considering a product called iDrive.

I am trying to find out something about it. The first question is
whether it will run on my computer which is, at present, running Windows
Vista. I think the most recent version of iDrive may not work with
Vista. iDrive has been around for awhile, which means that even if the
current version doesn't work with Vista, it might be possible to get an
earlier version that will run under Vista.

Another question is whether iDrive runs all the time. I care about this
because when I am not using my computer, I turn it off. If iDrive (or
anything else, for that matter) runs continuously, shutting off the
computer may be a problem.

When I say I turn off the computer, I mean I close anything that's
running, and turn the power off. If Drive never stops running,Â* and in
fact cannot be stopped, I will no longer be able to turn the computer
off. Or rather, doing so may cause a problem for iDrive.--

The current iDrive product does not work with Vista. The oldest Windows version it supports is Windows 7.

There is a product called "iDrive Classic" that uses the same account that will work on Vista. See here: https://zonealarm.idrive.com/online-backup-download.htm

Backup software products like this run when your computer is on. The first time they may need several hours to back up so you may want to leave your computer on until the first backup is completed. After that they do something called "incremental backup" which is only things that have changed. This can usually be done in the background while you have the machine on.

This looks like a great product and I may switch to it when my current backup subscription expires. I have loved and would have recommended CrashPlan, but they stopped selling consumer accounts and only do business now. Sad.

One of the items on my never-ending to do list is to set up backup
procedures for this machine. On my previous machine, I used a simple
procedure of , and I forget the command, but basically it just copied
all files to my external drive.

I would like to do something a bit more formal, such as commercial software.

Can anyone comment on this?

I hear radio ads for a product called I Drive. I asked our household
computer department (a k a my husband) and he said we don't have enough
bandwidth for I Drive.
