Mike Shefler
December 10th, 2017, 01:50 PM
A short list of only 10 defs this time. One really came from the
dictionary. (Reminder - the word is MEGH).
Vote for your 2 favorites no later than 10 AM, EST, Tuesday, December 12.

1. an Assyrian rock carving.

2. a kind of precious stone credited with magical properties.

3. former abbreviation for "megahertz," eventually simplified to "mgh."

4. the big toe.

5. [Sc.] in whisky production, the product of the first coarse grinding
of the malt to prepare it for fermentation.

6. a linn, waterfall or source of a stream.

7. a counting marker on a Sumerian abacus.

8. a low-lying meadow in a river valley.

9. one of several kinds of sand fly.

10. [Arabic] a junk yard. [a generalised version of _megh-car_ which was
a vast heap of British army officers' cars totally unsuited to desert
conditions which were abandoned near Basra after being bulldozed into
a heap by the BEF in 1915]

I don't really believe 10, but I'll vote for it because my grandfather
fought in Mesopotamia in WWI, although he had a horse rather than a car!
He was captured at the fall of the siege of Kut and spent 2½ years as a
prisoner of war in Turkey. For my other vote, I'll go for the watercourse,
6.

6. a linn, waterfall or source of a stream.
