View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Print Screen

I have just spent about an hour trying to get information from the User
Guide or whatever it's called these days, for my computer. The blasted
thing is in .PDF format which has been upgraded, revised, and "improved"
so that not only is one dealing with the computer itself, but one is
dealing with the software that will allow one to read the instruction
manual, but I digress.

Here is my question: recently I wanted to print the information
displayed on my computer's screen.

Along the top of my keyboard there are the usual keys: F1, F2, etc. At
the far right is a key labeled PRTSC at the top with SYSRQ below it. I
suspected that PRTSC might stand for Print Screen. Of course I might be
wrong about that. Being, apparently, a fairly stupid person, I figured
that I might bring up the computer's User Guide and do a search for
PRTSC. Not knowing, of course, that in order to use the user guide in
any meaningful way, I would have to get a user guide for using the .PDF
format files.

I am guessing that, assuming that PRTSC does indeed mean "print screen",
one has to press that button along with some other key. Likely choices
might be shift, ctrl, alt, and maybe FN. There is also a button for that
stylized "windows" symbol. I make the assumption that another key is
needed because (another assumption) the key has two function, one of
which is PRTSC and the other of which is SYSRQ.

Can any of you shed any light on this?

In case it matters, the computer is a Toshiba Satellite laptop that I
have had for years, without ever before wanting to print the screen. I
actually have a newer computer, but have never fully put it in service,
having apparently reached the age at which I am no longer jumping up and
down with the excitement of having a new machine. Instead I just think
of the need to transfer everything onto the new machine, which of course
has a newer version of Windows which will undoubtedly be "improved". I
could switch to an Apple product, but so far Apple and I have never
gotten along.

P.S. it is, of course, possible that I should be spending my time
looking into assisted living facilities.

Hi Guerri,

PrtSc is indeed shorthand for Print screen. However, the name is
misleading, as this button will not actually print the screen.

Depending on what software you have running, it *usually* (Windows, no
specific programs installed - see below) causes your operating system to
store a copy of your screen on the clipboard. You can then for instance
open a graphics program (I believe "Paint" is standard installed with
Windows, if a bit limited) and use Paste to get a copy of your screen in
that program.

Note that (a) I do not know how other operating systems handle the PrtSc
button; (2) I don not know if all versions of Windows work as described
above; and (iii) there are programs that when running or even when
installed override the PrtSc button to give it a different function.
(For instance, I have SnagIt running which is a dedicated screen capture
program with some advanced options that Windows doesn't have of its own;
it has re-programmed the PrtSc button to start itself and open the
dialog where I specify what part of the screen I want to capture)

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Hugo

Guerri,

You're dealing with a "non-feature" of long standing in Windows. The PrtSc
screen was once upon a time, actually a key to print the screen contents.
Somewhere along the line, however, it morphed into a "Copy to the Clipboard"
key. Alt-PrtSc will copy the current active window to the clipboard.
Ctl-PrtSc will copy the whole screen. What I usually do is launch Word with
a blank document and use Ctl-V to paste the clipboard into the document.

Judy,

That’s a pretty good way to deal with it. You’re way ahead of Microsoft. <lol>

In Win 10 (this is 64bit Pro) it all still works more-or-less as before
but I have just discovered that it also launches easycapture which
allows one to draw round the bit of screen you want to capture

Also what actually is captured with plain prtsc, ALT+prtsc , CRL+prtsc,
etc has changed with different versions of Windows

Thanks. That makes sense. Much more sense than calling it "copy screen".
Actually my keyboard's button is "PRTSC" on the top and "SYSRQ" on the
bottom. SYSRQ is a feature that determines your physical location,
searches for the nearest elder care facility, and phones a taxi to take
you to said facility. (sigh)
