View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2812 - time to vote for NYCHOMET

Shani Naylor
June 22nd, 2017, 04:11 AM
We have before us an even dozen definitions for our word NYCHOMET. Eleven
are fanciful fakes, and one comes from a real dictionary. You may vote for
any two.

1. An eye patch.

2. In Babylonian theology, a semi-divine agent of evil.

3. Dried leaf used in ancient times to make a perfumed ointment.

4. A piece of onyx.

5. Anything round like an apple; as, an apple of gold.

6. A surgical probe.

7. [Nanotechnology] A self-assembling monolayer formed on noble metal
substrates.

8. An invasive species of moth, _Hydria prunivorata_, originating in Asia,
and responsible for defoliation and devastation of oak and cherry trees in
the western hemisphere.

9. A foster child. Often the adopted son or daughter of a deceased relative.

10. [Anc. Egypt.] "Criminal ruler" or "evil ruler", a dysonym for
Ahkenaten after his death, applied to the disfigured monuments and
cartouches which had borne his name or image.

11. Ground onyx powder used in incense to intensify the other odors [this
word may refer to the ground-up shell of the sweet mussel rather than to
_onyx_ see Grk of Exodus 30:34].

12. A small hut or shelter mounted on a sledge, used by Sami reindeer
herders when following the migration.

Please vote by 10am Thursday 24 June my time (NZDT) or:

Wednesday 23 June, 3pm PDT

Wednesday 23 June, 6pm EDT

Wednesday 23 June, 11pm BST

Wednesday 23 June, midnight CEST

(please check these times and adjust accordingly)

New players always welcome!

Thursday is the 22nd and Friday is the 23rd. So I'm assuming you mean Thursday, June 22, and Friday, June 23.

I'll go with onyx:

4. A piece of onyx.

11. Ground onyx powder used in incense to intensify the other odors [this word may refer to the ground-up shell of the sweet mussel rather than to _onyx_ see Grk of Exodus 30:34].

Greetings from Skagway, where I’ll be panning for gold with the family later.Â* Yesterday I saw icebergs calving from a glacier.Â* Â*I’ll be mushing a dog sled on a glacier somewhere near Juneau tomorrow.

Going on the theory that 11 is the Barrs def and that he’s identified the etymology as being related to onyx, I’ll go with the more generic 4.

And I’ll use similar logic to take 10’s evil etymology as a cue to 2.

2.Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* In Babylonian theology, a semi-divine agent of evil.

4.Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* A piece of onyx.
