View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2788 word: LEAPYEAT

Efrem Mallach
March 18th, 2017, 01:03 AM
It never rains but it pours!

The word for Round 278 (barring too many disqualifications) is

************* LEAPYEAT **************

where the capitalization doesn’t indicate anything, and where the last letter is not a typo for "R." If you know what it means, please tell me by private e-mail. If too many people know it I’ll deal another word.

We're in Israel now, with generally good Internet access, so the dealing and voting periods should be reasonable. However, our next stop is the one place where I'm not 100% certain of that (southern end of the Dead Sea). So, if nothing is posted for some time after the deadline, that's almost certainly the reason. Please be patient. I'll accept definitions after the deadline if I haven't posted the list yet. We'll be at a friend's apartment 24 hours later. I'm sure she has a good Internet connection there.

Anyhow, please concoct a fake definition of LEAPYEAT and send it to emallach(at)verizon(dot)net in the next 38 or so hours; that is, by 10 pm Israel time on Sunday, March 19. Israel is not yet on summer time, so that's also:

1 pm in U.S. PDT
3 pm in U.S. CDT
4 pm in U.S. EDT
8 pm in the UK
9 pm on the Continent
9 am on Mon., March 20, in New Zealand

and other times in other places. The recommendation to confirm your time conversion applies even more strongly than usual at this time of year.

Please do NOT use my emallach(at)umassd(dot)edu address to send definitions (or for anything else at this point). That email system is going through a software conversion. I have to switch to the new system, and there are some issues that I can't deal with from here. Definitions sent to that address will go into a black hole, to emerge only when I've been back home for a while after the 26th. If your email software fills in my address automatically when you type the beginning of my name or of the address, please confirm that it is the verizon(dot) net address given above and change it if necessary.

Also, as usual, don’t Reply to this message with your definition, as that will publish it to the group.

New players are welcome! Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules> .

Actually, the word for round 278 was PUMPET played by Toni Savage

I noticed that typo as soon as the call for definitions went out, but figured that it was obviously an error, wouldn't confuse anyone (especially since the round number was correct in the title line) and that sending out a correction would just add to everyone's email clutter.

Which you and I have now done, twice over. :)

Now I had to look up PUMPET, too. It was defined as an alternative spelling of POMPET. So, naturally, I had to look that up ...

Next time I'll proofread my emails more carefully to save everyone's time!

Meanwhile, it's dinner time in this part of the world.

With about 16 hours to go, we have 8 definitions of LEAPYEAT from players Barrs, Bourne, Cunningham, Lodge, Madnick, Shefler, Shepherdson and Widdis. With one from a dictionary, that's a total of nine.

As usual:

- If you sent one and your name is in the list, all is well.

- If you sent one and your name isn't in the list, please send it again. If you sent it to emallach (AT) umassd (DOT) edu <mailto:emallach (AT) umassd (DOT) edu> I didn't get it, as mentioned in my original message dealing this word. I will not be able to retrieve it until a week from tomorrow at the earliest. Please send it again to emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net <mailto:emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net>.

- If you didn't send one yet, please do. A few more would be nice.

Folks,

Fourteen definitions of LEAPYEAT follow. One is its real meaning. The others are your fellow players' efforts to deceive you. They have been edited for format consistency and are in order by character count, which may not correspond to visual length. Please vote for two that you like for any reason by public reply to this message before the deadline that follows the list.

1. jumpy, nervous.

2. a type of olive.

3. an unjustified conclusion.

4. to repeal an undesirable law.

5. [Scots] a fish pass or ladder.

6. great acclamation or applause.

7. a large crossbow affixed to a revolving turret.

8. speech-making intended for the mass media; humbug.

9. a barrier fence of packed pine used in steeplechase races.

10. a centennial year which is not a leap-year although it is also millennial.

11. an earthen bank with a fence to allow deer to enter an area but not leave it.

12. a variety of kale having long, narrow, dark green leaves with a puckered surface.

13. a supplemental Mass held where the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is held on a Sunday.

14. to take action immediately, whether you agree or not; to move positively even when you don't feel right about it.

Votes are due about 48 hours from now: Tuesday, March 21 at 10 pm Israel time. That time is also, on the same date except as noted:

1 pm in U.S. PDT
3 pm in U.S. CDT
4 pm in U.S. EDT
8 pm in the UK
9 pm on the Continent
9 am on Wed., March 22, in New Zealand

New players are welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a definition for this word - as are, of course, veteran players who happened not to. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules> .

Hi Efrem,

Weird. I don't see my own submitted def, nor any def that appears as if
it could have been the result of combining with mine.
Oh well. Stuff happens.

My votes are for 4 and 8 - the undesirable humbug.

Cheers,
Hugo

Well, that explains it.

I saw an email in your post, copied it, pasted it in my To field, and

Absolutely my own fault.

hopefully at least a few giggles:

Hugo,

I'm not going to give you the traditional two DP for a dealer losing a definition, because I didn't lose it.

On the other hand, your intentions were good and that address would have worked in all my previous deals. It's hard for me to blame you as much as you seem to be blaming yourself.

So, one DP for a reasonable try at sending one in.

(For what it's worth, I had a short and light-hearted discussion with another player earlier, in which I raised the possibility that the word might come from "Leap Ye At:" an old game in which players were told to jump in the direction of specific objects.)

Hi Efrem,

That is one DP more than I expected, since it was my own mistake. It
also is one point more than I expected to get through regular play, if I

I'm not going to give you the traditional two DP for a dealer losing a definition, because I didn't lose it.

On the other hand, your intentions were good and that address would have worked in all my previous deals. It's hard for me to blame you as much as you seem to be blaming yourself.

So, one DP for a reasonable try at sending one in.

(For what it's worth, I had a short and light-hearted discussion with another player earlier, in which I raised the possibility that the word might come from "Leap Ye At:" an old game in which players were told to jump in the direction of specific objects.)

There's still something weird going on. I have not received a single one of Hugo's replies via Dixonary. The only way I know they're there is because someone replied back to him. They are definintely in the group (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dixonary) but the group is not sending them to me. I remember I had the same problem when I dealt and Hugo tried to send me a def. Something's wrong with google groups. Or it just doesn't like me (or Hugo).

Ah, but then which of 10 and 11 would you NOT have voted for? You don't have to answer that question - but cosmic balance is at stake once we go down that path! :)

I'll take 1 and 8.

Also suggest you repost under its own subject line if you don't get
responses from everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion, Nancy.

So far we have 12 votes. Of the three currently active players who haven't voted yet, only one is normally in a North American time zone. With 14 hours to go I don't think that suggests a problem getting the word out. If anyone else thinks a repost as a new thread (changing the subject line isn't enough; Google Groups is too smart to fall for that) is a good idea I'ill do that, though.

7. a large crossbow affixed to a revolving turret.

Let's remove the suspense: a leapyeat is a fence that allows deer to enter an area but not leave it. These were commonly used around deer parks in Ye Olde England, where the gentry would invite other gentry for an afternoon of deer hunting in an environment where the deer were at a distinct disadvantage. A fuller discussion of leapyeats, especially the leapyeat at Dartmoor, can be found here <http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/deer_park.htm>.

Most dictionary definitions of leapyeat include the word "barrier." I wanted to avoid that word because of Dan Widdis's steeplechase barrier, which I thought might lead people to think "it must be one of those two," so I rephrased it slightly. (The Dartmoor page linked above doesn't use that word.) The ploy was clearly unsuccessful, as half the voters (7 of 14) saw through it and picked the deer barrier anyhow.

The next deal goes to Judy Madnick, with a score of 5 for her humbug speech-making and guessing the true meaning. Runner-up and traditional "winnah" honors are shared by Nancy Shepherdson and Tim Lodge, both with 4 natural points, and Mike Shefler and Dan Widdis, also with four points but not natural scores. (I don't like the word "unnatural." Too many weird connotations.)

Guerri Stevens should have dealt Round 2786 a short while back, but I missed Mike Shefler's votes in compiling the results, announced John Barrs as the next dealer before the mistake was discovered, and he had already made a good deal of progress into the round before things were straightened out so he kept the deal. Guerri: How do you feel about taking this one instead?

Since

1. We haven't heard from Guerri.
2. I tied with Nancy as runner-up.
3. I'm ahead of Nancy in the rolling scores.

I propose to post a new word in about one hour's time.

If anyone has any objections, please send them to the forum before 11:10 GMT

Tim,

That would have been my next plan. Thanks for beating me to the punch. My only thought is perhaps to wait a bit longer than that, since your note went out at a bit past 6 am in Guerri's time zone. Perhaps give her until, say, 10 o'clock Eastern Daylight Time, or about three and a half hours from now?

There's a lot of Dealah love in this room.

Judy, hang in, these things take time to be fully recovered! We love you
and we're pulling for and with you!

I've dealt rather horribly a few times (forgot the real def once) so if
there is ever a dealer vacuum, e-mail me - include the game name Dixonary
and let me know! (With the understanding that i still deal a bit like a
nervous n0ob!)

Aw, shucks. Thanks so much. I feel as though I'm turning into my late
