View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2782 word: BRANE

Efrem Mallach
February 24th, 2017, 07:46 AM
Sorry for the delay in dealing, but the results were sent at 1:11 am in my time zone so I didn't see them until after breakfast this morning. Too soon after Round 2778, perhaps, but I had a 26-round dry spell before that so no complaints. The word for Round 2782 is:

************* BRANE **************

where the capitalization doesn’t indicate anything. If you know what it means, please tell me by private e-mail. If too many people know it I’ll deal another word.

Please concoct a fake definition and send it to emallach(at)verizon(dot)net in the next 48+ hours; that is, by 9 am U.S./Canada Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, Feb. 26. (That's a tad on the long side, but given my Saturday schedule, it was either that or making it too short.) That's 6 am PST, 8 am CST in North America. I think it's also:

2 pm in the UK
3 pm on the Continent

and on Monday, Feb. 27:

1 am in Melbourne
3 am in New Zealand

Don’t Reply to this message with your definition, as that will publish it to the group.

Votes will be due 36 hours after the definition deadline - that is, 9 pm Monday in North America EST.

New players are welcome! Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules> .

With about 23 hours to go, we have definitions of BRANE from players Barrs, Bourne, Chapple, Cunningham, Hale, Madnick, Naylor, Stevens and Widdis. With one from a dictionary - yes, it really is a word - that's a total of ten..

As usual:

- If you sent one and your name is in the list, all is well.

- If you sent one and your name isn't in the list, please send it again. If you sent it to emallach (AT) umassd (DOT) edu <mailto:emallach (AT) umassd (DOT) edu> you could try sending it to emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net <mailto:emallach (AT) verizon (DOT) net>, and vice versa, though nothing suggests a problem with either address today. You could also try a public message asking me to look again, but don't include the definition in that message.

- If you didn't send one yet, please do. A few more would be nice.

Fellow players,

A respectable 14 definitions of BRANE follow. One is its real meaning. The other thirteen are the product of your fellow players' branes - oops, brains - in their efforts to deceive you. They have been edited for format consistency and are in order by character count. Please vote for two that you like for any reason by public reply to this message before the deadline that follows the list.

1. an ambush.

2. integral protein.

3. strong; powerful.

4. [Scot.] a low hedge.

5. a bank of terracing at a football field.

6. a large marble used for dropping shots.

7. the excised paunch of a rabbit; to paunch a rabbit

8. a bacterial disease of wheat, Xanthomonas campestris.

9. a surface of density transition in a heterogeneous substance.

10. [Scot.] an infusion of dried heather flowers, used as a treatment for fever.

11. that part of the acting surface of a cog in a cog wheel, which projects beyond the pitch line.

12. an extended object analogous to the strings of string theory but having any number of dimensions.

13. a devotional altar composed of illustrated triptych panels mounted over an incense tray. From brân (Welsh).

14. [Phys.] an n-dimensional hypersphere of fixed radius used to mathematically simulate conditions inside a black hole.

Votes are due a bit under 36 hours from now: 9 pm on Monday, Feb. 27, in North America EST. That’s 6 pm PST and 8 pm CST on the same date, and on Tuesday, Feb. 28:

2 am in the UK
3 am on the Continent
1 pm in Melbourne
3 pm in New Zealand

and so on. (You may want to check any time conversion that affects you.)

New players are welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a definition for this word - as are, of course, veteran players who happened not to. Full rules at http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules <http://www.dixonary.net/game-rules-and-advice/rules> .

3 is far too simple, and 7 is ludicrous.

Fellow players,

Despite waiting almost two hours past the deadline - not for that reason, admittedly - one player who submitted a definition didn't vote. I was hoping he would, as he might have broken a tie, but that was not to be.

A brane is "an extended object analogous to the strings of string theory but having any number of dimensions." (It comes from "membrane," by the way.) This was definition 12. Mike Shefler was DQ and submitted the vaguely related definition 14; the two were chosen as a pair by three suspicious (or perceptive) players.

The deal ended in a tie among John Barrs, Tony Abell and the dictionary. While the dictionary's score was natural and the other two were not, its can't take the next deal. The first tiebreaker, natural scores, doesn't help here. Neither do rolling scores, since John and Tony are tied in that department. The next (and penultimate) tie-breaker is total scores since the creation of the universe; here, John leads by 2787 to 2331 (as of Round 2780). He therefore gets the next deal, with Tony the traditional "winnah."

Full results:

1. an ambush. From Stevens, G. who voted 3, 6. Voted for by: Shepherdson, N.. Score: 1.

2. integral protein. From Hale, K. who voted 6, 11. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

3. strong; powerful. From Bourne, T. who voted 8, 10. Voted for by: Stevens, G.; Cunningham, D.; Shepherdson, N. Score: 3.

4. [Scot.] a low hedge. From Cunningham, D. who voted 3, 7. Voted for by: Naylor, S.; Lodge, T. Score: 2.

5. a bank of terracing at a football field. From Madnick, J. who voted *12*, 14. Voted for by: None. Score: 2.

6. a large marble used for dropping shots. From Naylor, S. who voted 4, 10.. Voted for by: Stevens, G.; Hale, K. Score: 2.

7. the excised paunch of a rabbit; to paunch a rabbit. From Barrs, J. who voted 8, *12*. Voted for by: Cunningham, D.; Lodge, T. Score: 4.

8. a bacterial disease of wheat, Xanthomonas campestris. From Abell, T. who voted *12*, 14. Voted for by: Bourne, T.; Barrs, J. Score: 4.

9. a surface of density transition in a heterogeneous substance. From Shepherdson, N. who voted 1, 3. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

10. [Scot.] an infusion of dried heather flowers, used as a treatment for fever. From Lodge, T. who voted 4, 7. Voted for by: Bourne, T.; Naylor, S. Score: 2.

11. that part of the acting surface of a cog in a cog wheel, which projects beyond the pitch line. From Widdis, D. who voted *12*, 14. Voted for by: Hale, K. Score: 3.

12. an extended object analogous to the strings of string theory but having any number of dimensions. From Dictionary who did not vote. Voted for by: Madnick, J.; Barrs, J.; Abell, T.; Widdis, D. Score: D4.

13. a devotional altar composed of illustrated triptych panels mounted over an incense tray. From brân (Welsh). From Chapple, D. who did not vote. Voted for by: None. Score: 0.

14. [Phys.] an n-dimensional hypersphere of fixed radius used to mathematically simulate conditions inside a black hole. From Shefler, M. who declared himself DQ. Voted for by: Madnick, J.; Abell, T.; Widdis, D. Score: 3.

Take it away, John!

Nancy,

You're right. I somehow managed to swap your definition and Tony Abell's. I just went through all the definition emails. None of the others are misattributed. Don't know how it happened, but thanks for catching it!

The good news is that this doesn't change the next deal. Rather than Tony having 4 points and you having none, he now has 2 (for voting for the correct definition) and you also have 2 (for the two votes for your wheat disease, erroneously credited to him). John Barrs stands alone with 4 points, no tie-breakers necessary.

Mike - I assume you'll correct the score history with your usual thoroughness.
