View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2774: Time to vote

Shani Naylor

Hi all

We have 13 fanciful definitions for our word BROOSE. Please vote for two of
them.

1. Whisky [Scot.]

2. A leaking roof.

3. [Sc.] A windstorm.

4. A trodden way; a footway.

5. A waterproof covering for a hat.

6. To spread false or damaging accusations or insinuations.

7. Token of defiance or challenge; thing deposited as pledge of
performance.

8. _*Welsh*_ A soup made from the fronds of the seaweed laver, _
Porphyra umbilicalis_

9. The area above acoustic ceiling tiles where phone, data and
electric cables are stretched.

10. Parts of a whale remaining in a trypot after strips of blubber have
been boiled down to whale oil.

11. A medicinal tea brewed from the roots of black morrell tree
(_Eucalyptus melanoxylon_).

12. A drink shared with male friends. (Contraction of "bro" and "booze",
popularized by the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother")

13. *_Sc._* A race on horseback, or on foot, by the young men present at
country weddings in the north, the course being from the place where the
marriage ceremony is performed (in Scotland the bride's former home) to the
bridegroom's house. Hence _*to ride, run, win the broose*_. (The prize is
usually a coloured silk handkerchief.) It is understood to be a survival
from primitive marriage customs: probably the whole wedding cortège
formerly conveyed the bride at full gallop to the bridegroom's house; but
now the race is kept up by the young men only, the rest of the procession
following at leisure. Cf. bridelope n., and the Teutonic synonyms there
mentioned.

The deadline is 8am Tuesday 24 January my time (NZDT) or:

Monday 23 January 11am PST

Monday 23 January, 2pm EST

Monday 23 January, 7pm GMT

All welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a def.

Hi Shani,

I'll go with two of the less appetizing-sounding definitions: the
seaweed soup and the whale remains. #8 and #10
(And if this game supported bonus points for effort, I would definitely
nominate the author of novella #13)

Cheers,
Hugo

Using my random vote generator to avoid another deal: 4 and 12, please.

4. A trodden way; a footway.

12. A drink shared with male friends. (Contraction of "bro" and "booze",
popularized by the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother")

Folks,

Attached are votes from a friend, Duncan Chapple, who is interested in joining the game. His email to dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com was returned (unless he made a mistake in addressing it, which didn't appear to be the case in my cc).

Shani - could you please record his votes? I don't know if he submitted a definition in this round, but if it did it wouldn't have encountered this problem because it would have gone straight to you.

Whoever is the keeper of the group list - could you please add Duncan to it?

Thanks, and my own votes will follow in due course -

Efrem

Efrem

Hi all

We have 13 fanciful definitions for our word BROOSE. Please vote for two of them.

1. Whisky [Scot.]

2. A leaking roof.

3. [Sc.] A windstorm.

4. A trodden way; a footway.

5. A waterproof covering for a hat.

6. To spread false or damaging accusations or insinuations.

7. Token of defiance or challenge; thing deposited as pledge of performance.

8. _Welsh_ A soup made from the fronds of the seaweed laver, _ Porphyra umbilicalis_

9. The area above acoustic ceiling tiles where phone, data and electric cables are stretched.

10. Parts of a whale remaining in a trypot after strips of blubber have been boiled down to whale oil.

11. A medicinal tea brewed from the roots of black morrell tree (_Eucalyptus melanoxylon_).

12. A drink shared with male friends. (Contraction of "bro" and "booze", popularized by the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother")

13. _Sc._ A race on horseback, or on foot, by the young men present at country weddings in the north, the course being from the place where the marriage ceremony is performed (in Scotland the bride's former home) to the bridegroom's house. Hence _to ride, run, win the broose_. (The prize is usually a coloured silk handkerchief.) It is understood to be a survival from primitive marriage customs: probably the whole wedding cortège formerly conveyed the bride at full gallop to the bridegroom's house; but now the race is kept up by the young men only, the rest of the procession following at leisure. Cf. bridelope n., and the Teutonic synonyms there mentioned.

The deadline is 8am Tuesday 24 January my time (NZDT) or:

Monday 23 January 11am PST

Monday 23 January, 2pm EST

Monday 23 January, 7pm GMT

All welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a def.

I don’t quite believe 13, but I somewhat hope it’s true.

I similarly disbelieve 12, and hope it is not true.

Folks,

Attached are votes from a friend, Duncan Chapple, who is interested in joining the game. His email to dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com<mailto:dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com> was returned (unless he made a mistake in addressing it, which didn't appear to be the case in my cc).

I'll go for the extremes too: 1 and 13. If 13 is wrong, as it probably is, I'll console myself by thinking that anyone who can type that much deserves something for effort.

With no clue, I'll go with a whale of a lie, 6 and 10:

> 6.Â*Â*Â*To spread false or damaging accusations or insinuations.

> 10.Â* Parts of a whale remaining in a trypot after strips of blubber have been boiled down to whale oil.
