Fellow players,

Thirteen definitions of the word (yes, it is a word) ABENG follow. One is its real meaning. The others are clever attempts by twelve of your fellow players to deceive you. They have been edited for format consistency and are in order by character count, which may not correspond to visual length. Please vote for two that you like for any reason, such as but not necessarily because you think they might be correct, by public reply to this message before the deadline found after the definition list.

1. something dragging behind.

2. to go aside; to turn off.

3. a low, one-horse box sleigh.

4. a cylindrical lute made of bamboo.

5. an obsession with personal cleanliness.

6. a Jamaican bugle made from a cow's horn.

7. of or related to a minor tribe in Zambia.

8. in printing, a measure of negative space.

9. abnormal sound in chest heard with stethoscope.

10. obnoxious-sounding Japanese stringed instrument.

11. [Austral.] a throwing-stick used by Australian aboriginals.

12. [Polish, hist.] A long skirt of rich materials adorned with small silver bells, worn to celebrate the birth of a male heir.

13. [Chinese shamanism] A sacrificial pig or sheep killed at the doorway of a recently departed loved one to maintain relationship with the deceased spirit.

The voting deadline is 36 hours after the definition deadline, or about 35 1/2 hours from now. That is 9 am on Wednesday, Sept. 28, in North America EDT. I think that’s also, on the same date except in NZ:

6 am PDT
8 am CDT
2 pm in the UK
3 pm on the Continent
11 pm in Melbourne
2 am, Thurs., Sept. 29, in New Zealand

and so on. (You may want to check any time conversion that affects you, as this is the season when different countries go on or off summer time on different dates. Also, if you're regularly in a time zone that isn’t listed, please let us know.)

New players are welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a definition for this word - as are, of course, veteran players who happened not to submit one.

Efrem

4 and 10 - I can not imagine a "cylindrical lute" and any definition with
"obnoxious" in it has to be fake.

I've absolutely no idea for this word. I'll just guess at the bamboo lute
and the Polish skirt, 4 and 12.

4. a cylindrical lute made of bamboo.

12. [Polish, hist.] A long skirt of rich materials adorned with small
silver bells, worn to celebrate the birth of a male heir.
