View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2739 Time to Vote: CORODY

Efrem Mallach
September 7th, 2016, 08:28 AM
Fellow players,

Presented here for your consideration are 12 definitions of the word CORODY: more than a paucity, less than a plethora. One is its real meaning. The clever are clever, even fiendish, attempts by your fellow players to deceive you. They have been edited for formatting consistency and are in order by character count, which may not correspond to visual length. Please vote for two that you like for any reason, such as but not necessarily because you think they might be correct, by public reply to this message before the deadline found after the definition list.

1. [Scots] hilarious.

2. [Obs.] plagiarism.

3. a commotion; an uproar.

4. [Arch.] cardiac syncope.

5. [Obs.] love; tender regard.

6. an underground water channel.

7. a song of deep sorrow; a dirge.

8. an informal conference, a palaver.

9. a rewritten play by a different playwright.

10. a small lizard (_Aptus corodiniensis_) native to Madagascar.

11. a pension in food or such other things as may be required for sustenance.

12. [Hist.] The sludge or solids left at the final stage of boiling up whales for oil, sometimes discarded at sea.

13. bird's beak. Any of several species of Cordylanthus; hemi-parasitical plants in the broomrape family. Fairly uncommon to rare but as a whole bird's beaks are distributed widely over the South Western states of the USA and northern Baja California.

The voting deadline is 48 hours after the definition deadline, which was about half an hour ago: that is, 9 am on Friday, Sept. 9, in North America EDT. I think that’s also, on the same date except in NZ:

6 am PDT
8 am CDT
2 pm in the UK
3 pm on the Continent
11 pm in Melbourne
1 am, Sat., Sept. 10, in New Zealand

and so on. (If you're regularly in a time zone that isn’t listed, please let us know.)

New players are welcome to vote, even if you didn't submit a definition for this word - as are, of course, veteran players who didn't submit one.

These two are as good as any, I guess:

3. a commotion; an uproar.

5. [Obs.] love; tender regard.

Looks like 13, not 12 but you didn’t list “baker’s dozen” in your description.

My “any reason” this time will be refs containing words I don’t know: the syncope (4) and palaver (8).

Right you are! I miscounted in preparing the text of the voting e-mail. However, the list is correct, and all the entries in it are correctly numbered.
