View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2738: WITHE - Definition List

I believe this third stage carried out with no further incidents (I hope).
We have a total of 13 definitions for WITHE. Please vote for two, by
public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 6:30 AM EDT on
Monday, September 5, 2016, or 3:30 AM PDT .

1. [OE] Outside (of).
2. A narrow path or lane.
3. A length of willow, used in wickerwork.
4. Rough limestone country with underground drainage.
5. A leather water bag, esp. one made from the whole skin
of a goat.
6. A passage or channel of water lying between sandbanks
or between a sandbank and the shore.
7. [Archit] the wall used to divide two chimneys belonging
to adjacent buildings but which are built externally as a
single chimney. (For legal reasons this is not advised for
houses built straddling a property boundary and it is often
difficult to get insurance cover in such circumstances; for
legal implications see judgement in Smythe v Abercromby,
Chancery 1938)
8. [Mostly obsolete] The area surrounding a township or
city wherein all hunting and agriculture can be for the
good of that township or city only.
9. A tough supple twig, especially of willow, used for
binding things together.
10. The stubble left in a field after it has been burned
back.
11. The crank on a hand-turned roller mill.
12. A fictional name for a wild area.
13. A sign, token or hint.

7 and 8 hoping to stick Johnny with the deal. And "Archit" is weird. Not
to mention "mostly obsolete."

I'll try the straddling chimney and the obsolete hunting ground, 7 and 8,
please.

7. [Archit] the wall used to divide two chimneys belonging to adjacent
buildings but which are built externally as a single chimney. (For legal
reasons this is not advised for houses built straddling a property boundary
and it is often difficult to get insurance cover in such circumstances; for
legal implications see judgement in Smythe v Abercromby, Chancery 1938)

8. [Mostly obsolete] The area surrounding a township or city wherein all
hunting and agriculture can be for the good of that township or city only.
