The extra time has bumped the list up to an even dozen. Please vote for two
defs for MACRANER. The deadline for voting is 9pm Wednesday 31 August my
time (NZ) or 32 hours from now. Happy voting!

1. A device for controlling the speed of a Watt steam engine by
adjusting the volume of steam admitted to the cylinder (in use c.
1780-1820).

2. A breed of sheep obtained by crossing Merino with Scottish blackface..

3. A particularly large male ant.

4. An experimental bicycle drivetrain using magnets - abandoned as
inefficient in the 1940s.

5. Money—in contempt.

6. The large male in a disparate sized mating. Used of spiders where
the female is often much larger than the male.

7. A webbing sling used in bungee jumping to secure the jumper’s ankles
to the bungee cord.

8. One who climbs buildings for sport.

9. [Sc.] A liquid measure of 10 cc., reputedly used by a barkeep in
Aberdeen, in order to give short measure to customers.

10. A plainclothesman.

11. A ratcheted adjustable spanner.

12. A gamekeeper.

I'll try these:

7. A webbing sling used in bungee jumping to secure the jumper’s ankles to the bungee cord.
9. [Sc.] A liquid measure of 10 cc., reputedly used by a barkeep in Aberdeen, in order to give short measure to customers.

Both 2 and 6 are bizarre enough to be possibly true.

2. A breed of sheep obtained by crossing Merino with Scottish blackface.
6. The large male in a disparate sized mating. Used of spiders where the female is often much larger than the male.

I didn't realize that large male ants are a "thing" in NZ?

Mike

large all sorts of things have been associated with NZ - moas,
haast-eagles and, of course, the kakapo - so I just extended the
possibilities in honour of Shani

There's a chain of convenience stores named 7-Eleven, though I'm not sure why that should affect my Dixonary votes. I don't think there are any 7-Eleven stores in New Zealand.

The thought of cross-bred sheep climbing buildings makes me vote for 2 and
8.

2. A breed of sheep obtained by crossing Merino with Scottish blackface.

8. One who climbs buildings for sport.
