View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2725: HARFANG Defs up

Tony Abell
July 14th, 2016, 06:44 PM
Despite waiting several hours after the deadline, I have only collected a scant 12
definitions of harfang, one of which comes from a dictionary. The remainder come
from the fertile imaginations of the players.

Vote for two by way of a public response to this message before the deadline.
You may vote even if you did not submit a definition, but you may NOT vote if you
are disqualified (see the rules at http://www.dixonary.net). The voting deadline
shall be:

Saturday, 10:00am EDT 16-Jul-2016
Saturday, 07:00am PDT 16-Jul-2016
Saturday, 03:00pm BST 16-Jul-2016
Saturday, 04:00pm CEDT 16-Jul-2016
Sunday, 12:00am AEST 17-Jul-2016
Saturday 2016-07-16 1400Z

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. A "dog's thumb", or "dewclaw". A vestigial digit found on the foot of most
mammals, birds, and reptiles.

2. A Scandinavian fishing village.

3. An ironclad excuse.

4. [Norse myth.]Â*One of the Ice Giants.

5. Miserly; stingy.

6. A haircloth. [Obs.]

7. Snowy owl.

8. A fearsome looking shark with an eel-like body and 25 rows of razor-sharp
teeth that has been roaming the ocean for about 80 million years.

9. Twisted out of shape, said chiefly of the feet.

10. A round Viking shield, used both for personal defence and as armor on the
side of a longboat.

11. A steering oar on a longship.

12. A traditional stringed instrument used originally to play the music of
Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the
violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a
standard violin) and thinner wood. Four of the strings are strung and
played like a violin, while the rest, aptly named understrings or
sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four.

Norse and Norway have a nice ring to them:

4. [Norse myth.] One of the Ice Giants.

I think it’s rather silly to note that an 80-million-year-old shark with 25 rows of teeth is “fearsome looking.â€

I wonder if it could be killed with a steering oar?

8 and 11 please

I'll go for the digit and the fiddle, 1 and 12, please:

1. A "dog's thumb", or "dewclaw". A vestigial digit found on the foot of
most mammals, birds, and reptiles.

12. A traditional stringed instrument used originally to play the music of
Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the

I’m with the Vikings: 10 and 11. I don’t know what the words for these things were, but there must have been words for them.
