View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2708: Cast your votes!

Dodi Schultz
May 14th, 2016, 10:29 PM
We have only 14 defs, perhaps because submission time was on the short side this round—but it was either that or the very long side, which can make the game drag. But all the better your chance of picking the real def!

Choose the two definitions you think most likely to be the real meaning of

DIDAPPER

and register your choices by direct reply to this ballot. Exception: If you now realize that you recognize the real definition, you may not vote; in that case, please notify me privately that you've disqualified yourself.

Votes must be cast no later than:

Monday, 16 May
9 a.m. EDT
8 a.m. CDT
6 a.m. PDT
2 p.m. BST
3 p.m. CEST
11 p.m. AEST
Tuesday, 17 May
1 a.m. NZST

 1. any of several species of migratory curlews or sandpipers of the family Scolopacidae, noted for their distinctive breeding (alternate) and winter (basic) plumages.

 2. a device by which two types or colors of glass powder can be deposited on a surface, prior to heating to form enamel, without mixing the powders themselves.

 3. in computer coding, a "double back door" feature; once one of the means of entry is deployed, all other means are completely eliminated.

 4. a device for calculating the amounts of standardized dyes to be introduced to a container of paint to produce a specified color.

 5. _formerly_ a horse or pony kept for show rather than for riding or pulling a carriage.

 6. a small piece of some material, often paper, used as a wedge to level a table.

 7. a large biting mosquito, especially _Psoriphora ciliata_ of the Americas.

 8. one who raises money for religious works by selling indulgences.

 9. a large carnivorous horned toad with very large, sharp teeth.

10. an adjustable clip used on suspenders or garters.

11. a teacher who fails to follow the set syllabus.

12. a small grebe, such as the dabchick.

13. some sort of adz. _obs._

14. a laborer in a tin mine.

I'm intrigued by 2 and 4 and have to wonder if #2 was the precursor to #4
but I don't think dyes are used in paint so I'm dismissing both. Which
probably means one or both is right.

I've never owned a horse but I've known a few show ponies who deserved a
special word. And I've never worn suspenders (at least not in public) but
I'm sure their clips need a special word too.

So I'll take 5 and 10.

I'll try the table wedge and the adz (which I assume is the N, Amer,
spelling of adze). That's 6 and 13, please.

6. a small piece of some material, often paper, used as a wedge to level
a table.

13. some sort of adz. _obs._

I'll go with the "devices" today.

2. a device by which two types or colors of glass powder can be deposited on a surface, prior to heating to form enamel, without mixing the powders themselves.

4. a device for calculating the amounts of standardized dyes to be introduced to a container of paint to produce a specified color.

And the winner is: The American Heritage Dictionary. Five of you voted for its definition, #12, guessing that a didapper is a little grebe.

The next highest score is a natural three, achieved by three players: Tim Lodge, Judy Madnick, and Mike Shefler. Mike's ranking ahead of the others in the rolling scores makes him our next dealer.

Full details below.

Funny … I wrote a note to myself to vote for the birds, 1 and 12, when I woke up this morning. Then it slipped my mind and I missed the deadline. A good thing, too, because that vote would have given me the next deal!

Congratulations, Mike. Couldn’t happen to a better person.
