Shani Naylor
March 8th, 2016, 12:09 AM
Moving right along....

I could see this deal coming when three of the first four players voting
gave a nod to my def.

The word for Round 2690 shall be:

*************************************

kylie

*************************************

I've written it in lowercase letters to show that it is not a proper noun
(ie it's not referring to a girl's name).

Please send your fake definition to my gmail address and let me know if you
are DQ.

The deadline for submitting definitions is 7am Thursday 10 March my time
(NZDT) or:

Wednesday, 9 March, 10am PST

Wednesday,10 March, 1pm EST

Wednesday,10 March, 6pm GMT

Wednesday,10 March, 7pm CET

Thursday, 10 March, 5am AEDT

(please check these times and adjust accordingly)

New players always welcome!

Do you mean a trademarked word? No, it isn't.

Ho ho, very funny (for those not of our shared culture there is current
court case about the trademark)

Shani,

I assume the three instances of “Wednesday, 10 March” in the deadline list should be “Wednesday, 9 March”?

As for proper nouns: I’d love to Google the trademark case John referred to, but I’m concerned that the search results list might give away the definition of the word. Can someone who’s familiar with that situation give us a sentence or two?

Efrem - as it was me that thought it was an apposite joke rather than a
serious question --- quick reply

It is presumably sub-judice but I personally have never heard of Jenner
whereas Minogue has been around and famous for at least 25 years - One
can never tell what will happen with any judge but the case is something
like ...

"Kylie Minogue has challenged Kylie Jenner’s attempt to trademark her
name, so we have Kylie versus Kylie.

The two cultural giants are going to the US Patent and Trademark Office
– now that Minogue has filed a notice of opposition to Jenner’s attempt,
initiated last year, to trademark variations of her very famous handle.

The battle will be fought on paper in a federal building in Alexandria,
Virginia, between the teenage reality star and the 47-year-old
Australian singer falls.

The notice of opposition began by listing the many ways in which Minogue
has trademarked variations of the name “Kylie” since 2003 for the many
products produced by her empire and then went on to establish the length
of her career in the public eye beginning with her entry to the
entertainment industry in 1979, the release of her first album titled
"Kylie" in 1988: Minogue has sold more than 80M records and won a
grammy. Having survived breast cancer Minogue also works using her name
in public awareness schemes for various health issues around the world -
there is even a "Kylie effect" in this area"

Hope that helps --- Jenner is, I believe, in the Kashardian family and a
reality TV star

Efrem, this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2016/02/28/kylie-minogue-kylie-jenne_n_9343410.html

will tell you more than you need to know with no risk of accidentally
DQing. I like the way Kylie M's lawyers rather archly described Kylie J as
a "secondary reality television personality".

Meow.

Thanks to you and to Jim Hart for his reply. I had heard of Ms. Minogue, though I am not familiar with her oeuvre, but hadn’t heard of Ms. Jenner either. That whole family seems to get by on being famous for no reason other than being famous.

Now I’ll be able to sleep tonight, with nothing to keep me awake besides coming up with a credible definition for this word. Maybe it’s a … oh, well.

Yes for the dates. Thanks.

And actually I have heard of this case, but didn't have a clue when Jim
asked his question last night. All I could think of was "but I've already
said it's not a proper noun". But I didn’t see any problem answering what I
thought was a serious question.

You can be sure I would never deliberately choose a word which references
the Kardashians.

Shani, Your original post was all lower-case so I figured I was safe in

Gee, they're very chic people. Good friends of that class act, Donald J. Trump.

I don't know if any of my fellow Americans ever watched the Donald's
"Apprentice" show back in the day; I confess that I did occasionally. And
in one episode, the challenge for the contestants was to create and market
something (I'm not positive at this point, but I think it might have been a
perfume of some sort) for Kim Kardashian, whom he introduced as an
extremely high-class and refined lady, daring the contestants to come up
with something worthy of her extremely exalted stature.

Maybe he'll be calling on her to help him fix the US when he becomes President.
