View Full Version : [Dixonary] EVITE results

This was interesting - I found "evite" with a one-word def ("shun") - and
it ''can'' have a sense of "avoid" but that was not in the first def I
found. Then two defs came in with a sense of "avoid" but not of "shun" -
but "procrastinate" is not concordant with the base definition, and if I
combined 1 and 2, then not combining 6 might have semed odd, and combining
2 and 6 would certainly have been odd,and combining all three would have
given a def with a meaning quite distant from the initial definition. And,
of course, the remotely related definition of "fatalism" <g>. I suppose
this was absolutely inevitable.

Chris Carson apparently sent a def, but it never even made it into my Spam
folders, alas. And I would not use a commercial neologism for "e-vite"
even in my nightmares.

1. shun (Webster) NV (Shefler) (Barrs) (Widdis) (Schultz) (Naylor) D5

2. [Arch.] to avoid. (Lodge) 13 14 (Madnick) (Bourne) (Shefler)

3. to annihilate. (Stevens) 6 14 (Widdis) 1

4. listless, purposeless (Barrs) *1 2 (Hart) 2 + 1 = 3

5. a semi-precious gemstone. (Shepherdson) NV (Graham) 1

6. to avoid; procrastinate. (Shefler) *1 2 (Madnick) (Stevens)
(Mallach) (Naylor) (Abell) 2 + 5 = 7!!

7. To tingle; to quiver or tremble. (Naylor) *1 6 2 points

8. To dress or adorn tawdrily or with false taste. (Widdis) *1 3 2
points

9. an outcome that could have been avoided; fatalism. (Hart) 4 11

10. To obtain land by persuasion and financial promises. (Hale) 11 13 nil

11. of an international understanding or agreement, concluded outside
normal diplomatic channels. (Schultz) *1 2 (Hale) (Hart) 2 + 2 = 4

12. A substance formed by meteorite impact; a component of the tektites

Evangelical Believers) that settled in northeastern Montana in the late
19th Century and died out by 1920. (Graham) 5 13 (Lodge) (Stevens) 2

Making Mike Shefler the new dealer with 7 points, and Tim Lodge the
"winner" with 6 natural points.

Bourne 2 12
Abell 6 9
Carson 1DP if desired - the def did not even get to Spam file, alas

Dave,

Perhaps I shouldn’t complain about a gift, but I voted for the similar #2 and #6, not for #1. The vote for #2 shouldn’t be flagged as correct in my score, and I shouldn’t get two points for voting correctly. I should end up with 3 points, not 5.

Efrem voted for 2 - and the asterisk was my typo - he only has his 3
points. Mea Culpa.

This is about the eighth time or so it has happened on Dixonary AFAICT (a
second def is also quite "correct" but not the one the dealer was using) -
and I have been in exactly your position it seems each time <g>

You can't win 'em all because, in this game, you would have to deal every other round.

This is about the eighth time or so it has happened on Dixonary AFAICT (a second def is also quite "correct" but not the one the dealer was using) - and I have been in exactly your position it seems each time

This was interesting - I found "evite" with a one-word def ("shun") - and it ''can'' have a sense of "avoid" but that was not in the first def I found.. Then two defs came in with a sense of "avoid" but not of "shun" - but "procrastinate" is not concordant with the base definition, and if I combined 1 and 2, then not combining 6 might have semed odd, and combining 2 and 6 would certainly have been odd,and combining all three would have given a def with a meaning quite distant from the initial definition. And, of course, the remotely related definition of "fatalism" . I suppose this was absolutely inevitable.

Chris Carson apparently sent a def, but it never even made it into my Spam folders, alas. And I would not use a commercial neologism for "e-vite" even in my nightmares.

1. shun (Webster) NV (Shefler) (Barrs) (Widdis) (Schultz) (Naylor) D5

2. [Arch.] to avoid. (Lodge) 13 14 (Madnick) (Bourne) (Shefler) (Barrs) (Mallach) (Schultz) 6 points

3. to annihilate. (Stevens) 6 14 (Widdis) 1

4. listless, purposeless (Barrs) *1 2 (Hart) 2 + 1 = 3

5. a semi-precious gemstone. (Shepherdson) NV (Graham) 1

6. to avoid; procrastinate. (Shefler) *1 2 (Madnick) (Stevens) (Mallach) (Naylor) (Abell) 2 + 5 = 7!!

7. To tingle; to quiver or tremble. (Naylor) *1 6 2 points

8. To dress or adorn tawdrily or with false taste. (Widdis) *1 3 2 points

9. an outcome that could have been avoided; fatalism. (Hart) 4 11 (Abell) 1

10. To obtain land by persuasion and financial promises. (Hale) 11 13 nil

11. of an international understanding or agreement, concluded outside normal diplomatic channels. (Schultz) *1 2 (Hale) (Hart) 2 + 2 = 4

12. A substance formed by meteorite impact; a component of the tektites found across central Europe. (Madnick) 2 6 (Bourne) 1

13. a nozzle, mouthpiece, or fixture through which the blast is delivered to the interior of a blast furnace or to the fire of a forge. (Mallach) *2 6 (Hale) (Lodge) (Graham) 2 + 3 = 5

14. member of a German religious sect (Evangelische Gläubige - Evangelical Believers) that settled in northeastern Montana in the late 19th Century and died out by 1920. (Graham) 5 13 (Lodge) (Stevens) 2

Making Mike Shefler the new dealer with 7 points, and Tim Lodge the "winner" with 6 natural points.

Bourne 2 12
Abell 6 9
Carson 1DP if desired - the def did not even get to Spam file, alas

I looked it up after voting as well, and found that same def, with the specific designation of archaic. Seems to me that both defs 1 and 2 were in fact legit defs.

Isn't the usual award for a lost def 2 DPs rather than 1?

I always thought so, but then isn't one of the rules that the dealer is
always right?

2 points if it made it to any of my spam folders -- I generally got no
points when mine disappeared without a trace :(

Darn! I'm not sure where it could have ended up . Oh well, I'll take the point and be more careful. Did I not notice the status message or wasn't there one this round? That's where I usually detect a lost message. In any case I'll try to pay more attention next time.
