View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2683: fallal - Definition List

Chris Carson
February 10th, 2016, 06:25 PM
Here we are despite a glitch or two - hopefully the last of this round. A
word of apologetic explanation for the apparent skipped defs - those of us
who use Cory with the IMAP mode scan the email inbox for subjects
containing the round number and/or the word. Copying the announcement
will cause a mismatch due to the inserted spaces also inserted by Cory's
standard message template. I guess I'd better edit the template to remove
those in the future. That said, I think I got all of the submitted defs.

There are a total of 18 definitions for FALLAL. Please vote for two, by
public reply to this message, before deadline, which is 6:30 PM EST on
Friday, February 12, 2016, or 3:30 PM PST .

1. The westerly wind that blows into the Mediterranean Sea
around the Straits of Gibraltar and Morocco.
2. A fried and puffed rice snack that originated in
Buddhist temples of Korea.
3. A pond fed by a submerged spring.
4. A showy article of dress.
5. Rubbish; trash; junk.
6. Mulch made from the needles of the longleaf pine
(*Pinus palustris*). Also called “longstraw.”
7. Granular igneous rock.
8. Stone dust and chunks left over from stone carving.
9. An advertisement announcing a non-existent product.
10. A prayer shawl.
11. _Arab._ Of a food or drink, forbidden by Islamic law.
12. Generic, meaningless song lyrics, such as
"fa-la-la-la la".
13. (Mil.) A dike of piles in the sea, a river, etc., to
check the approach of an enemy.
14. A salad made from bulgur or wheat germ and seasonal
vegetables.
15. A feral camel, esp. a dromedary.
16. Green beans, a staple foodstuff of the Middle East and
North Africa.
17. [Obs. Falconry] A disease in hawks where the talons go
white and fragile.
18. Ornamental braiding, esp. as a decorative feature on
ceremonial uniforms.

Except for the one I made up, they're all unbelievable. But I believe in
Chris and trust that one of the other 17 is really real. It might be, but
probably isn't, one of these two:

3. A pond fed by a submerged spring.

4. A showy article of dress.
