How are those of you on the East Coast getting on in the snow that we've
been hearing so much of on the TV news over here in the UK?

Thanks for asking, Tim.

We were on the northern fringe. Got about 4”/10cm, but nothing that was difficult to deal with (especially after last year).

It was a real quockerwodger further south, though. (Wish I had thought of that one a couple of days ago.)

They had snow in Jacksonville FL and in Gainesville (frozen Gators)! We
are a tad further south - Ormond Beach got down to 30 last night (airport
temp about a mile from us).

That's interesting - you *have *been lucky. After I posted my question, I
found this website:

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/snow-and-ice/recent-snow/110/1

which shows that there's been snow within 60 miles or so of you.

It's a balmy 14°C/57°F here today, but it was quite a bit colder last
week. We didn't have snow here, but my two sons, 20 to 30 miles further
east, had enough to take their children sledging.

Gosh - that sounds cold for Florida. We had a holiday (sorry, vacation) in
the Keys about 10 years ago, and it was splendidly warm and sunny.
Afterwards we flew up to Atlanta to visit friends and on arrival the pilot
announced that the temperature was 28, which sounded great to us until we
stepped outside and realised he was talking in Fahrenheit!

Here in New York a record was broken or almost broken. That, it seems, was
a snow depth of 26.9 inches, which was or wasn't matched this weekend,
according to various news sources. It seems the official measurement may be
26.8 inches. Or maybe 27.0 inches.

All I know is that there are a round table and some chairs in the backyard
right outside my office window, but I can't see much of the yard, because
there is this THING on the table. It's a huge white mound, more than two
feet high, and—well, if you remember Monty Python's giant blancmanges,
that's what it looks like.

As to the city: I think we'll survive. The NY State governor and the city's
mayor moved fast: Buses stopped running at noon Saturday, nonessential
vehicles were ordered off streets and roads half an hour later so as not to
impede the snow plows, salt spreaders, and emergency services, and folks
were advised to stay indoors. Most, except for the dog-walkers and a few
other hardy souls, did.

I'm sure Google can tell you lots more.

Here in Somerset County New Jersey we got in the neighborhood 30 inches according to our snow shoveler who just arrived. It's hard to tell accurately because of the drifting. The wind was blowing last night but it didn't get very close to blizzard strength - just enough to move the snow around and drift it a bit. Our road is clear but it is icy on the hills. We're just thankful that we didn't have any power problems. New Jersey Transit is still pretty much shut down so it remains to be seen if I'll be able to get into the city tomorrow morning.

By way of absolutely nothing, my wife is doing her January voluntary English teaching in Costa Rica and she was complaining yesterday that the daytime temperature there has been over 90 deg. F (32.2 C.) for several days.

Chris lives just a bit to the east of me. My neighborhood picked up only about
440 mm (~17 inches) of snow, but that is an honest figure, the average of
several measurements made away from buildings.

I've kept weather records for years. My snow totals are always lower than those
reported in surrounding areas, probably because I aim for a true, representative
number, not a maximum. It's very tricky to measure snow depth accurately,
especially when there is drifting, which was the case yesterday. There are drifts
well over a meter deep in my backyard; even if you avoid the obvious mounds when
you plunge a measuring stick down, you could still get a spuriously large value.
Frankly, I'm even suspicious of the "official" totals in some cases. I don't know
if they were done correctly, either.

That actually sounds closer than the 30" figure. I might believe 24" but 30 seems an overreach. We're near the intersection of Somerset, Union and Middlesex counties on the first ridge of the Watchung mountains; although it's hard for a former resident of Colorado to consider these little rises "mountains". Given the slight elevation and the slope I think we gather a bit more snow but it was definitely drifting yesterday.

Now we'll see if NJT has the trains running tomorrow.

Here in the upstate area of South Carolina we survived the blizzard of
'16, namely a personally-estimated 4-6 inches that Dodi and others in
her area would find laughable. We ventured out yesterday to shop. It is
always a surprise to find that there are cars abandoned on the sides of
roads, even after what, to this former New Englander, would be a
relatively minor storm. And of course we have learned over the years
that supermarket's parking lot will not have been plowed.

On this east coast there's been absolutely no snow in Melbourne (thats AU,
can't speak for Melbourne FL) but hate to think what would happen if we
ever did get any. Last week we had a couple of brief thunderstorms with
short heavy rain periods. As always the traffic suddenly became
intolerable, either because more people think they had better drive or
because they drive nervously, or both. And of course they then manage to
run into each other all over the place since the roads are always a little
bit greasy with first rain yet few seem to allow for this. Guess it's just
as well modern cars have intelligent brake systems or it would be even
worse... or have we become too reliant on our car's systems to protect us?

here in UK, (according to the weather boffins) we are just about to
receive the same storm as gave the USA all that snow - it is forecast to
be lotsa rain on already saturated ground and high winds - our whole
weather area (central South) has a met-office yellow alert for flooding
and driving conditions

The rain has just arrived here! We ourselves should be OK because
although the water table is already at or above ground level we are a
bit higher than most others around here and as ours empties towards the
river it can be heard trickling under our "downstream" neighbours
